I started to read this to learn about Islam and I was hoping to see how the religions compare. The problem I had with it was there were a lot of half truths and misinformation in it about the Jewish and the Christian religion and that got me wondering. If there's that many mistakes and not true things about these two religions, then there are probable a lot of misinformation about Islam. As such I stopped reading it and tossed it. I only bought it because The Bible for Dummies was such a good read. My advise. Skip this one.
This is well-written for those who had e no previous knowledge o f the Abrahamic religions. HOWEVER the title is totally misleading. It should be WESTERN Religions for Dummies. You've left out 2/3 of the world, which is why I only gave it three stars. 😄
This is a great introduction to the history of the three Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It covers the origins of each religion, as well as the basic tenets and sacred texts of each. As in the other "Dummies" books, the text is easy to follow and very readable (though I would disagree with the reviewer who stated it was "for little kids").This book is written from a historical perspective by religious scholars, and is fairly even-handed (it doesn't support one of these religions over the others), which I appreciated. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a simple place to start in learning about the Abrahamic religions and increasing their level of religious literacy.
Good introduction to major religions. There are really no prerequisites so anyone interested in the topic should be able to read this book.
If you read this book, you will know 99% more about the three main religions than the average American. Tons of information but so relevant that you don't mind the volume.
Good Comparison of the Abrahamic Religions,
pretty much as expected. easy read. good outline of the three religions. should have gone into more detail behind the historic conflicts between the three - it blew past the Holocast and crusades in just a few sentences
Living in this age of religious conflict I needed more facts & knowledge. This "for Dummies" book satisfied my quest & curiosity. Written in a manner that spoke clearly to me our complex religious history.
