ASCENT is my favorite in the series and that is saying something as I have used PEAK in my 7th grade classroom for over ten years. I love character driven novels and sequels that share the growth of the main character. Peak is such a complex character who in ASCENT travels on another perilous climbing adventure. But the book is so much more than just an outdoor adventure novel; it is full of intrigue, family drama, hope, friendship, and even romance, I don't want to share anything that happens in the story as Roland Smith is a master at writing more than what is on the page. Just like Peak this book is complex and on my second read, I not only made all the sounds again that are part of my headline, but also the" hmmm" that comes with thinking about the writing itself. I LOVE all of Roland Smith's books; they are some of my favorites to read over and over and they are NEVER on my shelf once school starts. Even if you haven't read the other novels in the series you should read ASCENT. However, starting with PEAK and reading through the series is definitely worth the time and worth the wait to get to ASCENT. Now, if you have read PEAK and THE EDGE make sure you don't read ASCENT on a plane ride while gasping and screaming out, "No, Way!" and "Stop It!" and scaring your fellow passengers. Can't wait for whatever is next!!Note to teachers - if you need a novel that will transform student's critical reading experience try PEAK.
I really enjoyed the series. I would like it to continue.
Excellent book
Peak has found himself in the tropical rainforest of Myanmar. Not exactly his favorite place given the extreme heat, dampness, bugs, and of course venomous reptiles. Even though he is on this trek with Alessia and her body guard Ethan, the alluring target is their planned climb of Hkakabo Razi. One would think that his past life and death climbs would cause Peak a few moments of indecision, but for Peak the planning of a dangerous climb is completely alluring. After all, hanging by a "rope" is just a normal experience for any serious mountaineer. Can you say "extreme chaos!" Peak's adventures are never a calm experience. There are always risks, some are life threatening (mutated strain of malaria, militia, environmental degradation, dangerous wild animal attacks, avalanches, and death). Of course there are minor challenges (extreme weather, treacherous footing, harsh conditions, and the expected "stabs, slices, pokes, bites, and stings"). And yet, for Peak to turn down a climb is like a reader refusing to open a book. He just has to answer the call of the next mountain. If you are an "on the edge" reading junkie, there is no greater thrill than continuing a saga with characters that have "stretched" your every day universe beyond endurance. When Peak was first introduced, I considered him "edgy" and completely ready for any "over the edge" experience. With continued climbing experiences, he has matured into a mountaineer who is now a respected leader.Be brave and enjoy another "Peak" experience,MrsK
I haven't read the other Peak Marcello adventures but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I know a little about rock climbing and that helped. I didn't know that there were high peaks in Myanmar and apparently Peak didn't either because he didn't bring all of his equipment. But first Peak, his love interest Alyssa and her guard Evan need to survive the jungle with its Burmese tiger, insects and venomous snakes. And a homicidal Mahout and his angry elephant. The story was adventurous and well-told. Climbers from prior adventures suddenly appeared, but if you haven't read those books you can get up to speed. Plus you will learn more about high altitude climbing, the repair of high rope bridges and even swimming through an avalanche.
I didn't know this book was part of a series until I read other reviews. Reading this book without reading the others is totally doable, and I am now interested in going back and reading The Edge and Peak.I enjoyed this book. It had plenty of twists and adventures - maybe too many. The amount of action is a bit overwhelming and the continuous coincidences are slightly unbelievable. The book would have been just as interesting without so much action, and with more descriptive scenes and surroundings.A few parts, especially involving Alessia (who seems to only be added to the story because it needed a female character) bugged me, but I won't say any more so that I don't give away any of the story.
I have to admit that I love adventure stories, no matter if it is Shackleton on Icy waters or Captain cook on the seas or Mountaineering.Mountaineering is something which is very unique where it is mind over body, you need more mental skills than body strength. This book is about a Peak Marcello who goes to Myanmar (Burma) to conquer the Razi mountain which is the tallest peak - I thought it was fiction until I google to find out that the mountain does really exist. The story has multiple variations and surprises to it which make it a real nail biting adventure, I read this on a long flight and enjoyed it !
Prior to this book, I had never read a Peak Marcello Adventure, so I had no idea what to expect. This book was so great! It is full of adventure and plot twists, some predictable, some not at all. The main character is very likable and I found myself routing for his success at every turn. The writing is crisp and concise, but still descriptive enough to give a good picture of the surroundings and characters. Overall, I really enjoyed it and will be picking up some more Peak Marcello Adventure books in the future!
