ASCENT is my favorite in the series and that is saying something as I have used PEAK in my 7th grade classroom for over ten years. I love character driven novels and sequels that share the growth of the main character. Peak is such a complex character who in ASCENT travels on another perilous climbing adventure. But the book is so much more than just an outdoor adventure novel; it is full of intrigue, family drama, hope, friendship, and even romance, I don't want to share anything that happens in the story as Roland Smith is a master at writing more than what is on the page. Just like Peak this book is complex and on my second read, I not only made all the sounds again that are part of my headline, but also the" hmmm" that comes with thinking about the writing itself. I LOVE all of Roland Smith's books; they are some of my favorites to read over and over and they are NEVER on my shelf once school starts. Even if you haven't read the other novels in the series you should read ASCENT. However, starting with PEAK and reading through the series is definitely worth the time and worth the wait to get to ASCENT. Now, if you have read PEAK and THE EDGE make sure you don't read ASCENT on a plane ride while gasping and screaming out, "No, Way!" and "Stop It!" and scaring your fellow passengers. Can't wait for whatever is next!!Note to teachers - if you need a novel that will transform student's critical reading experience try PEAK.

I really enjoyed the series. I would like it to continue.

Excellent book

Peak has found himself in the tropical rainforest of Myanmar. Not exactly his favorite place given the extreme heat, dampness, bugs, and of course venomous reptiles. Even though he is on this trek with Alessia and her body guard Ethan, the alluring target is their planned climb of Hkakabo Razi. One would think that his past life and death climbs would cause Peak a few moments of indecision, but for Peak the planning of a dangerous climb is completely alluring. After all, hanging by a "rope" is just a normal experience for any serious mountaineer. Can you say "extreme chaos!" Peak's adventures are never a calm experience. There are always risks, some are life threatening (mutated strain of malaria, militia, environmental degradation, dangerous wild animal attacks, avalanches, and death). Of course there are minor challenges (extreme weather, treacherous footing, harsh conditions, and the expected "stabs, slices, pokes, bites, and stings"). And yet, for Peak to turn down a climb is like a reader refusing to open a book. He just has to answer the call of the next mountain. If you are an "on the edge" reading junkie, there is no greater thrill than continuing a saga with characters that have "stretched" your every day universe beyond endurance. When Peak was first introduced, I considered him "edgy" and completely ready for any "over the edge" experience. With continued climbing experiences, he has matured into a mountaineer who is now a respected leader.Be brave and enjoy another "Peak" experience,MrsK

I haven't read the other Peak Marcello adventures but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I know a little about rock climbing and that helped. I didn't know that there were high peaks in Myanmar and apparently Peak didn't either because he didn't bring all of his equipment. But first Peak, his love interest Alyssa and her guard Evan need to survive the jungle with its Burmese tiger, insects and venomous snakes. And a homicidal Mahout and his angry elephant. The story was adventurous and well-told. Climbers from prior adventures suddenly appeared, but if you haven't read those books you can get up to speed. Plus you will learn more about high altitude climbing, the repair of high rope bridges and even swimming through an avalanche.

I didn't know this book was part of a series until I read other reviews. Reading this book without reading the others is totally doable, and I am now interested in going back and reading The Edge and Peak.I enjoyed this book. It had plenty of twists and adventures - maybe too many. The amount of action is a bit overwhelming and the continuous coincidences are slightly unbelievable. The book would have been just as interesting without so much action, and with more descriptive scenes and surroundings.A few parts, especially involving Alessia (who seems to only be added to the story because it needed a female character) bugged me, but I won't say any more so that I don't give away any of the story.

I have to admit that I love adventure stories, no matter if it is Shackleton on Icy waters or Captain cook on the seas or Mountaineering.Mountaineering is something which is very unique where it is mind over body, you need more mental skills than body strength. This book is about a Peak Marcello who goes to Myanmar (Burma) to conquer the Razi mountain which is the tallest peak - I thought it was fiction until I google to find out that the mountain does really exist. The story has multiple variations and surprises to it which make it a real nail biting adventure, I read this on a long flight and enjoyed it !

Prior to this book, I had never read a Peak Marcello Adventure, so I had no idea what to expect. This book was so great! It is full of adventure and plot twists, some predictable, some not at all. The main character is very likable and I found myself routing for his success at every turn. The writing is crisp and concise, but still descriptive enough to give a good picture of the surroundings and characters. Overall, I really enjoyed it and will be picking up some more Peak Marcello Adventure books in the future!

Biomedical Signals and Sensors III: Linking Electric Biosignals and Biomedical Sensors (Biological and Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering)

From the Back Cover

As the third volume in the author’s series on “Biomedical Signals and Sensors,” this book explains in a highly instructive way how electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields propagate and interact with biological tissues. The series provides a bridge between physiological mechanisms and theranostic human engineering. The first volume focuses on the interface between physiological mechanisms and the resultant biosignals that are commonplace in clinical practice. The physiologic mechanisms determining biosignals are described from the cellular level up to the mutual coordination at the organ level. In turn, the second volume considers the genesis of acoustic and optic biosignals and the associated sensing technology from a strategic point of view. This third volume addresses the interface between electric biosignals and biomedical sensors. Electric biosignals are considered, starting with the biosignal formation path to biosignal propagation in the body and finally to the biosignal sensing path and the recording of the signal. The series also emphasizes the common features of acoustic, optic and electric biosignals, which are ostensibly entirely different in terms of their physical nature. Readers will learn how these electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields propagate and interact with biological tissues, are influenced by inhomogeneity effects, cause neuromuscular stimulation and thermal effects, and finally pass the electrode/tissue boundary to be recorded. As such, the book helps them manage the challenges posed by the highly interdisciplinary nature of biosignals and biomedical sensors by presenting the basics of electrical engineering, physics, biology and physiology that are needed to understand the relevant phenomena.

Review

"Deeply honest and brave . . . A sincere and intelligent act of self-questioning . . . Hansen is doing something both rare and necessary." ―Hisham Matar, The New York Times Book Review (cover)"A piercingly honest critique of the unexamined white American life." ―The New Yorker"Informed by deep reading in the history of U.S. foreign policy . . . At a time when our wrenching politics have turned our gaze on ourselves, [Hansen's] book is a necessary tonic." ―Christian Lorentzen, New York Magazine "Searching and searing . . . [Suzy Hansen] combines a brisk history of America’s anguished intervention in the region; artful reporting on how citizens in Turkey and its neighbors view the United States today; and unsparing self-reflection to explain how she, an Ivy League-educated journalist, could be so ignorant of the extent of her country’s role in remaking the post-World War II world . . . Notes on a Foreign Country is a testament to one journalist’s courage in digging deep within herself to understand the real story and to make sure she gets it right." ―Barbara Spindel, The Christian Science Monitor"[Hansen] asks probing and difficult questions that left me ruminating about their significance in our current political climate . . . An insightful read for any American who is, has been, or will be living abroad . . . Hansen’s book serves as a call to serious reflection and action for white Americans, even, and perhaps especially, the liberal, well traveled, and well intentioned." ―Rebecca Barr, Los Angeles Review of Books"Compelling . . . [Hansen] vividly captures the disorientation we experience when our preconceived notions collide with uncomfortable discoveries . . . Rare and refreshing . . . Hansen's principal injunction to Americans to understand how others view them and their country's policies is timely and urgent." ―Ali Wyne, The Washington Post"Hansen turns a coming-of-age travelogue into a geopolitical memoir of sorts, without sacrificing personal urgency in the process . . . Her long stay in Istanbul (she’s still there) gives her an outsider’s vantage on myopic American arrogance that is bracing. And her fascinating insider’s view of Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s rise upends Western simplicities . . . The experience is contagious." ―Ann Hulbert, The Atlantic"A kind of absolution and redemption for one thoughtful and sensitive US citizen . . . conducted by an insightful writer with remarkable powers of observation." ―Kaya Genç, The New York Review of Books"A fluid amalgam of memoir, journalism and political critique ― and a very readable challenge to American exceptionalism." ―Alice Troy-Donovan, The Financial Times"Extraordinary . . . This is a beautiful, angry, sad piece of writing that every American should read as we try to live in a world that has long known things about us that we are only now coming to understand." ―Ruth Conniff, The Progressive "Ardent, often lovely . . . If Noam Chomsky could write like this, Hansen's work would already be done." ―Karl Vick, TIME"It would be difficult for an American reader not to feel changed by this book. By framing the history of American imperialism within her own journey from innocence to knowledge, Hansen serves as a guide to whom we all can easily relate." ―Andrew Wessels, Los Angeles Review of Books"Hansen’s sustained self-criticism indicts the white American system itself and, in the process, does the field of journalism a great service with her humility, introspection, and willingness to defy the establishment line." ―Belén Fernández, Jacobin"Crucial and powerful . . . A keen and penetrating meditation on the decline of the United States . . . Downright prophetic." ―Ryne Clos, Spectrum Culture"Sobering yet hopeful . . . Written with compassion and a deep thirst for justice, this book is a must for anyone struggling to make sense of the rapidly changing times we live in." ―Jeannine M. Pitas, America "Eloquent and impassioned . . . Hansen leaves us with the fervent hope that Americans can reconnect us to the rest of humanity." ―Tom Zelman, Minneapolis Star-Tribune"Fascinating . . . Hansen artfully conveys her own initial lack of awareness of the world, and her realization that she had internalized American exceptionalism into her own identity." ―The National Book Review“Hansen’s must-read book makes the argument that Americans, specifically white Americans, are decades overdue in examining and accepting their country’s imperial identity . . . Hansen builds her winning argument by combining personal examination and observation with geopolitical history lessons. She is a fearless patriot, and this is a book for the brave.” ―Emily Dziuban, Booklist (starred review)“Lucid, reflective, probing, and poetic, Hansen’s book is also a searing critique of the ugly depths of American ignorance, made more dangerous because the declining U.S. imperial system coincides with decay at home. The book is a revelatory indictment of American policy both domestic and foreign, made gripping by Hansen’s confident . . . distillation of complicated historical processes and her detailed, evocative descriptions of places, people, and experiences most American audiences can’t imagine.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred and boxed review)“To be an American is of itself, George Santayana once wrote, a moral condition and education. Notes on a Foreign Country embraces this fate with a unique blend of passionate honesty, coruscating insight, and tenderness. A book of extraordinary power, it achieves something very rare: it opens up new ways of thinking and feeling.” ―Pankaj Mishra, author of Age of Anger“Suzy Hansen’s Notes on a Foreign Country is an essential, compelling read of an American woman’s coming of age and her experience abroad. Hansen describes how her own narrative of the United States’ role in geopolitics began to unravel only once she stepped out of her insular life in New York and into the unfamiliar world of Istanbul. With colorful anecdotes, observations, and telling interviews, Hansen seamlessly weaves together the complex fabric of Turkish society, and with that presents a fresh look at the United States and the perceptions abroad of its foreign policy and of its people.” ―Lynsey Addario, photographer and theauthor of It’s What I Do“It is rare to come across an American writer who has moved through the world―especially the Islamic world―with the acute self-awareness and thoughtfulness of Suzy Hansen. She has deftly blended memoir, reportage, and history to produce a book of great beauty and intellectual rigor. Everybody interested in America and the Middle East must read it.” ―Basharat Peer, author of A Question of Order“Notes On a Foreign Country is at once a kaleidoscopic look at modern Turkey, a meditation on American identity in an age of American decline, and a gripping intellectual bildungsroman. I’m in awe of this wise, coruscating book.” ―Michelle Goldberg, author of The Goddess Pose“It’s really quite simple: if you have any interest at all in how the non-Western world views America and Americans, you must read Suzy Hansen’s beautifully composed memoir Notes on a Foreign Country. And when America’s leaders complain―while campaigning and in office―that there is “great hatred” for the U.S. (and that they want to get to the bottom of it), it should be required reading by government officials―all the way to the Oval Office.” ―Hooman Majd, author of The Ayatollah Begs to Differ

Brilliant. The most important book I've read all year. James Baldwin would have been proud of the searching eloquence of Hansen's book, her insistence on peeling back the lethal innocence of so many fundamental American myths, of American exceptionalism, of America's inherent goodness in the world, and of the widespread American assumption that, in smaller, weaker countries a suspicion of America can be dismissed as envy or knee-jerk anti-Americanism. Not so. I've lived in America for 35 years, but before that I grew up in South Africa, where many of the observations that Hansen makes about America's brutal interference in Turkish and Pakistani and Iranian and Greek politics have half-echoes.From the perspective of smaller countries—Turkey, Guatemala, South Africa, wherever—a gaping contradiction opens up between America's self-image as disseminator of democracy and it's on-the-ground actions to overthrow democracy, undermine sovereignty, prop up apartheid, install dictators. One of Hansen's essential points is this: so much American foreign policy has been premised on a binary of good and evil, a binary intolerant of—and ruinous toward—the infinitely varied local permutations of what particular societies consider to be their own particular ideals. If you belong to an empire, you—we—have to own our outsize responsibility, which first and foremost means owning your history. As Americans we are at liberty to forget, to remain in a cocoon of ignorance, not so the peoples who have been at the sharp end of America's actions.Others may see this book differently, but as a naturalized American I read it as a clear-eyed love letter to America, a challenge to the nation to become its own best self by facing up to the global (and internal) costs of its historical self-delusions. Congratulations to Hansen on carrying forward the spirit of that most passionate and visionary American writer, James Baldwin.

Suzy Hansen's recent book, "Notes on a Foreign Country", lives up to the expectation I had for it. The author, who spent years abroad, (mostly in Turkey) tells of a world which sees America very different from how we view ourselves. She introduces a healthy skepticism which should be an eye opener for most Americans...that we are far from the wonderful people we think we are and have contributed to a great deal of the world's misery. That's not to say she isn't pro-American, but Hansen uncovers why the United States is viewed as it is, relating conversations she has with individuals with whom she speaks. One thing the author says is that no matter where we go in the world, the first thing Americans feel is how superior we are to other countries and peoples. She exposes the notion of "American exceptionalism" as not much more than a jingoistic feeling designed to make Americans feel better about themselves. "Notes on a Foreign Country" is designed to be unnerving in its candid approach to finding out what others think of us. I highly recommend it!

This book shook me to my core. Since the moment I finished, I couldn't think about it. There was nothing in it that I didn't know, to some degree.Growing up in Turkey, you hear about how there's Uncle Sam behind it all. The Americans organized the coup. The Americans fattened up the Islamists. The Americans probably even stole your newspaper from your doorstep. It's tough, to separate fact from fiction. And hearing the same stories over and over again, it's hard to not get so jaded, that you come out apathetic on the other side. But then, sometimes you need a punch in the stomach like this book. This book is undeniably about America, how the false premise of American exceptionalism, that's built on, generously speaking, lies, has led Americans, more than any other reason, to project their values on the rest of the world. Suzy Hansen's slow undoing of her American innocence, and discovering what it means to American in a post-pax-Americana world is a must read.
