Before reading this book, I would have to claim total ignorance of the Irish role in the Great War. Something to the tune of 50,000 Irishmen laid down their lives for the Allied cause, however, and while it may seem absurd knowing what we know now of Sinn Fein and the later tensions in Ireland, it should be remembered that the "Easter Uprising" hadn't even started when John F. Lucy signed up to fight. The Irish were in some sense eager to fight as a nation in order to prove their autonomy to the world. That's at the macro-level, though. "There's a Devil in the Drum" deals with the Great War and some of its greatest (in scale) battles, but it's a worm's eye view detailing the participation of one man and his ill-fated brother in the bloodbath. The book follows Lucy from his early innocence as a raw recruit, on into his almost-unheard-of promotion to the noncom ranks at the age of 21 (!), followed by a short time as an officer. The prose is lucid, unvarnished, and achieves the quality of sorrowful poetry especially in scenes of combat, which are naturally numerous. And on that subject, Lucy's recounting of warfare is about as vivid as it gets. He describes men un-spooling their intestines from their stomachs like field wire, suicide and mental breakdown in the trenches, all with a dose of sympathy for his fellow-sufferers' and nary an ounce of pity for himself. He actually destroyed his war diary at one point, burning it in a fit of pique and disgust, but his recall is eidetic despite that.During those short reprieves, leaves, and bits of convalescence he's able to sneak in, he becomes something of a soldier's version of Yeats on returning to Ireland, describing the countryside of the Emerald Isle as if it were a healing paradise.A perfect, unflinching look, at any rate, into the fires of hell. May Lucy's soul rest. Highest recommendation.

I currently work in the WWI Centennial community, and read every personal account I can find. This one stands on its own. It is truly special. Irishman John Lucy has an astonishing eye to recount the human moments from his long military experience with the Royal Irish Rifles in the trenches of France. And what moments - being hilariously hazed in barracks before the war; digging the first trenches of the trench war; having his entire regiment wiped out TWICE; receiving battle promotions to corporal, to sergeant, to officer; a tense meeting with the firing squad Sergeant who executed the leaders of the Easter Rising; seeing the first tank battle ever at Cambrai, etc. etc. His point of view is unique — as an Irish Nationalist man joining just for employment/adventure, serving through hell with those from counties North and South, during a remarkable time in Ireland’s, and the world’s, history. It is as somehow if he were kept alive from the war, in order to be able to tell this full picture — of who was there with him during this time, and what they did. I will never forget this book. Read it, and you will not, either.

Fascinating story about Irish soldier John Francis Lucy who fought and kept a journal during the beginning through the end of WWI.John is a hero, and a man of valor, with bravery, honor, and a reverent spirit. The stories he tells are the most gruesome and terrible scenarios built out of turn of the century nightmares, but it is all true. After reading this novel I have had even more admiration for the brave men who fought in The Great War. As an American, we aren't taught nearly enough about this War and it's impacts, John Lucy's experience will stay with me forever, as a reminder and appreciation for the sacrifices our European brothers made.

I have read many autobiographies of World War 1 and this is one of the best. It is well written and the author has the unusual fortune to make it almost through the entire war; An almost unheard of accomplishment by a front line soldier. A must read!

An astonishing first hand account of a soldier in the Great War. It starts in 1912 as a recruit in Ireland and is a very readable account of life and death in the trenches. It should be 'require' reading for any student of the 1st World War. This is a no nonsense factual account of a soldiers 'lot', from the opening phases of mobile open warfare through to the static years of trench life. It describes the death agonies of the "Old contemptibles' and the birth of Britains Citizen Armies.Breathtaking well written book I can commend and really all should read this.

One of the best memoirs of WWI I have read with special emphasis on the Irish Experience This is a topic often downplayed in traditional Irish history.

This book was enthralling; I couldn't put it down. A very candid glimpse from a point of view that one doesn't get from military history text books. It is a definite must to supplement one's study of the Great War, and accessible enough for a novice at history, like myself.

This is a wonderful book, yet another memoir from a veteran of WWI but told in a straightforward manner from the viewpoint of an enlisted soldier (and Irish, too). The detail of his enlisted life is unmatched elsewhere.

From the Back Cover

Using the simplest and most physically intuitive arguments and methods, Introduction to Superconductivity exposes not only graduate students but professionals in academe and industry to the breadth and richness of the phenomenon of superconductivity. Applications as well as fundamental principles are thoroughly covered. The author not only views superconductivity as a macroscopic quantum state, as described by the Ginzburg-Landau phenomenological equation, but also recognizes that the fundamental entity is the paired electrons of the microscopic theory of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer. Special features include a treatment of varied phenomena in a simple way which keeps the microscopic theory of BCS in the background, and a thorough discussion of magnetic properties of type II superconductors, including dissipative effects and the use of twisted multifilamentary wires. After treating the fundamentals of the Josephson effects, an analysis is given of how the popular RF-biased SQUID magnetometer works. An extensive discussion of fluctuation effects is also included. Major changes in this new edition include the following: new chapter on high temperature superconductors; updated and expanded discussion of the Josephson effect; new chapter on the Josephson effect in mesoscopic junctions; new chapter on nonequilibrium superconductivity; introductory treatment of electrodynamics in London theory level; and the deemphasis of nonlocal electrodynamics. The level of treatment presumes a background in Solid State Physics and Basic Quantum Mechanics and avoids the use of Thermal Green's Functions.

I am a grad student researching superconducting circuits for quantum information. Everyone in my lab uses this book as a reference so I bought it to use as my introduction to superconductivity theory. I like the book very much and would recommend it to anyone who has taken a graduate course in quantum mechanics.Tinkham's basic theoretical development is clear and comprehensive, and the accompanying discussion is actually helpful. You can learn how to really extract information from a theory if you pay attention to how Tinkham works the BCS theory in chapter 3. There's a good reason this book is a classic. After just reading chapter 3 I was able to understand essentially everything I need to have an intelligent conversation with others in my research group.I recommend this book along with Van Duzer's "Superconducting Devices and Circuit." While Tinkham is presumably a book on basic theory, and Van Duzer is presumably a book for applications, both books provide brilliant gems of insight in each other's domain. They make a great pair.Prerequisits: Second quantization, basic solid state, and basic E&M. In short, a first year grad student's education is more than enough.

A bit denser than other intros, but the best intro I've read. Tinkham does a great job guiding the reader (i.e. suggesting skipping the BCS chapter), giving examples, and not oversimplifying. Its clear the writer had a broad base of knowledge and a good historical account of a lot of the research. Comments on some complex superconductive phenomena which most other intros skip out on (non-equilibrium and other odd effects)

What a wonderful book for a graduate student learning the basic knowledge of SCs it is! Worth to buy it. After reading some chapters of this book, one could possible know the reason that why it has been cited over 10,000 times until now.

I was introduced to this book (1st edition) while in grad school (research in SC) and, in my collection of books related to this field, Tinkham's is all the way to the top.If you are really serious about understanding SC theory, this one is a must have.

worth to buy it

Michael Tinkham was a great developer of the field and made a fine book for students to have (in my opinion)a second approach to the subject.

The theory of superconductors is an amazingly complicated and rich field, and it can be very daunting to begin studying without a large background in physics. This book does an excellent job telling you the details enough to understand what is going on without giving you so much that it becomes a daunting task to read the book.Having only read through the first three chapters so far, I give that caveat before continuing. The first chapter, the author says upfront, is difficult to follow, as it gives a quick outline of every future chapter in the book. I would recommend skimming the first chapter, and then after reading each chapter go back and see if you got the key points illustrated in the first chapter. The second chapter, a treatment of the London equations, does an excellent job deriving the London equations in the first section, then providing a great deal of application of the equations, as well as outlining the limits of that model of superconductors.Chapter 3 is where the book gets down to business, as Tinkham gives an introduction to BCS theory. This treatment uses plausibility arguements to justify many of the conclusions or assumptions, but also provides some guidance to the mathematical rigor you might use to really prove the assertions you make. The chapter does not leave you feeling very confused at all, and the section can be read almost straight through.Although I have not read any further into the book, I can only imagine that it is more of the same. I would strongly recommend this book to anybody interested in learning something about superconductors before trying something more rigorous, such as Schrieffer's classic text on the work.

This book provides an excellent comprehensive review of most of the aspects relevant to superconductivity. A strong basis in physics is required to follow it all the way. Otherwise, it is possible to read most of the chapters separately without loosing continuity, so the more complex ones can be put aside if the reader is not interested in deep physics. Many references to relevant authors are given all along the text. It should be a reference available to all the people seriously involved in superconductivity. The only bad point is that it uses CGS unit rather than SI units.

Almost Nothing: The 20th-Century Art and Life of Józef Czapski, by Eric Karpeles

Review

"This absorbing biography aims to rekindle interest in the Polish painter and writer Józef Czapski (1896-1993), whose career was for decades stymied by history's tumult. As a Soviet prisoner of war, he gave lectures on Proust and wrote a history of French painting, and, in 1940, was one of only a few hundred survivors of the Katyn massacre, in which twenty-two thousand Polish officers were killed. After the war, exiled in Paris, he advocated for a free Poland and wrote two searing memoirs, but only in old age was he able to devote himself to his paintings, which Karpeles analyzes with acuity and grace. Czapski call painting both "prayer" and "defeat," after a lifelong "apprenticeship of learning." --The New Yorker

Józef Czapski is a well-known -- yet not very profoundly -- figure in Poland. His account of imprisonment in Soviet camps and his wartime search for the twenty thousand murdered comrades, collected in "Inhuman Land" and "Memories from Starobielsk" (both forthcoming from NYRB), from banned books have gained the status of required reading. Yet Czapski was much more than a survivor. Like Proust, whose writings became his life companion, Czapski was above all an artist of great sensibility, registering with keen perceptiveness minute changes in the quality of light that fell across objects as well as fine expressions of human face and body that often speak to their true feelings or hidden motives. Trained to be a painter in Paris between the wars, Czapski was thrust into history against his will, but never recoiled before the encounter. The first uniform he wore was that of Tsar's guards. Then he fought on the Polish side in 1920 against the Bolsheviks. In 1939 he joined the Polish army again, as an officer, with the intention to fight the Germans, but instead found himself facing a surprise attack of the Soviets on the Eastern front, near Lvov. Captured, along with thousands of others, he was among the 395 (and just over seventy from his camp) who survived the Katyn massacre. The disappearance of these tens of thousands Polish officers, Czapski's comrades, was not known until Germany had attacked Russia and, in desperate need of fighting forces, Stalin issued an "amnesty" to Poles caught in the enormous web of Soviet gulags. A river of migrants -- both soldiers and civilians -- flowed to the banks of the Caspian sea where General Anders was gathering his army. The breadth of Karpeles's historical research is impressive, but perhaps more importantly, an artist himself, he is able to present his subject with great feeling, yet without unnecessary sentimentalism. The pages describing Czapski's search, in 1942, for the missing officers are probably among the most moving in the book: even while we know the outcome of that search, we cannot help but be swept by the slightest hope that Czapski might be successful. As a historian, Karpeles has a well-honed sense of the present moment: that is, of that moment in the past as experienced by those who lived it, knowing what they knew and what was unavailable to them at the time. He is also closely tuned in to the changes in historical perception: for example, something that might come as a shock, the early and staunch support for Stalin in the West -- to the point that anything critical of his regime was immediately censored (e.g. on his early fundraising trip to America to gather support for the emigrant cultural/political publication "Kultura" in Paris, Czapski was explicitly forbidden from mentioning Katyn; similarly, in France, copies of his "Souvenirs de Starobielsk," published with the support of de Gaulle and other well-placed figures, against the popular communist condemnation, were being bought out by the French Communist Party and burned...). At times, Karpeles's book reads like a political/historical thriller. At others, Karpeles taps into the shared fascination with Proust whose work and life provide a canvas against which Czapski's own development and sensibility come into focus. As a painter, Karpeles can be critical of Czapski's creative output and able to appreciate both his failures and the moments of brilliance and inspiration obtained in Czapski's dogged pursuit of his craft. For a figure like Czapski, an artist, a diarist and a writer on topics as varied as history, painting, literature, politics, a self-professed Polish patriot and a lover of Polish culture, yet critical of narrowly conceived "patriotism" and opposed to any form of calcified nationalism or Catholicism (dominant in the country then as it is now!), at home in French as in Polish, Russian, and German (German was the language of tenderness between him and his mother), it is a great stroke of luck, or maybe fate, to have a biographer who is equally sensible to nuance, discerning in politics, and capable of navigating often hostile waters. Czapski's story is thus also interwoven with, no less fascinating, narrative of Karpeles's research. Not at all self-centered, this added perspective bridges the past and the present, allowing the reader to view the contemporary world through the artist's lens. Not hampered by the sort of self-censorship that haunts writing in Poland today, Karpeles is able to explore Czapski's sexuality, his inner conflicts, his religiosity, with an uninhibited simplicity. We thus get a full portrait of a complex character who, above all, remained true to himself throughout his life.

Probably one of the most beautiful books I've read. It is not only biography of the painter, writer and unbelievable historical figure (what a richness of life!!!), but the book about the artist written by the artist, the model for writing about someones life. It is not only fascinating combination of facts (which indeed are extremaly interesting in Czapski life - from russian Tzsar, to Stalin, Soviet camp and parisian "golden time" of Proust, Picasso, Diaghilev etc.), but first of all it is the book about finding the substance of life, substance of painting. This book gives the reader a breath of understanding what is art and what is life. It is also the biography of entire 20th century - it shows its beauty, level of complication, darkness and pain.It is important biography, and work of art istelf, piece of an outstanding prose of the 21st century.

I was disappointed in Radio Sound effects, as the subtitle "Who Did It, and How, in the Era of Live Broadcasting" is a bit misleading. While it is an interesting and even somewhat intriguing read if you are into the comings and goings and mishaps of radio's most often heard non-actors, it does little to document the methods that they had to resort to to create the sound effects. There is a story here and there about the creation of effects, but most of the emphasis is on what went wrong or who had drinks with who, and who got fired afterwards. While a readable social narrative, the book just doesn't come up to snuff in the technique and method area.

This book was exactly what I needed for research on the golden age of radio. It was Informative, it was entertaining, it was perfect. Thank you

I purchased this book from Amazon and almost immediately returned it. The reason is that this is a very poor reproduction of McFarland's hardbound edition of 1993.The text is very informative and having lived through the golden age of radio in the 1930's and 40's this book answered a lot of questions about how all those woderful sounds were made that accompied the radio shows of that era and in essence made them so much more enjoyable. My main objection is that the reproduction of the photos in the paperback (and there are quite a number) look like they were done on a cheap copy machine. It is nearly impossible to distinguish what is in each picture. The paperback paper is also only a little better than newsprint. To say the least I was terribly disappointed. I then went on line and looked for hard bound copies of the original book and the prices were about ten dollars and up - a far cry from the cost of even the paperback. I now have the hardbound copy and the pictures are exactly what you would expect - crystal clear and the paper is of a much better quality. If you are only interested in the text then the paperback book is fine (I would give the text 4 stars) but if you want to see all the pictues of the equipment then do not buy this book. This is the 2nd paperback reprint that I have had to return in the last month for the same reason - totally unacceptable reproduction of the photographs in the text. Finding the hardbound copies fixed all the problems found in the paperback edition.Richard

Ok, so I am an Antique Radio hobbyist who really enjoys the "Golden Age of Radio"...but anyone who enjoys well written, humorous real life stories will enjoy this gem from the talented and expert Robert Mott.Though not very technical in its information, the excellent vintage photos, anectdotes, and relaxed writing style will capture anyone who has the least bit of interest in finding out how the illusion of radio theatre was created, way back when it was truly "On the Air"

RADIO SOUND EFFECTS by ROBERT L. MOTT McFarland & Company Publishers, 1993 283 pages, 140 pictures & illustrations, comprehensive 11 page index. This is an excellent book on the subject. The author tells his many stories from the wide variety of shows he worked on through radio's golden age. Very specific examples and descriptions on the working of all the sound effects from the simple footstep to the complicated Fibber closet gag. The book also chronicles much about the history of dramatic radio from it's beginnings up through the television age. For those interested in the technical aspects of sound on radio in those days, dozens of pictures are included with detailed descriptions of their uses and mechanical workings- In fact, a great deal of information on the history of recorded sound in general is included within it's pages. Best of all, the book also contains hundreds of great anecdotes which will have you laughing out loud and make you feel like you were really there!! Overall this book is loaded with facts, a wonderful collection of star studded historic photographs, amazing histories, and hilarious stories all told with Mott's witty and charming style which will keep you glued to the book as if it were a riviting detective novel! Highly recommended!!Jason

This book is written so that everyone, not just entertainment industry veterans, can understand it. I actually remember the items in his chapter on Captain Kangaroo, and the older programs, like Jack Benny, are fascinating, even if I missed the Golden Age of Radio. He also details the transition from radio to television in detail. It really does read like a novel, but it all happened. A great read, but I docked it one star for the poor reproduction of the photos, my only complaint.

This is a wonderful book. First of, it's not that technical, it's more of a history book of the Golden Age of radio. The book has so many wonderful and hillarious stories about those days, that it was strong in nostalgia, even though I wasn't born until 1971!I wouldn't call this a book for 'audio' people, anyone who lived during the time of old radio, or anyone who still loves to listen to old reruns of The Shadow will LOVE this book.Tim.
