SPOILERS.. I guess I should have paid more attention to the book description, but I've read and enjoyed many of Elin's books and didn't think this would be an exception. Big mistake. Maybe it's me, but I hate stories about people dying. The first two-thirds of the book were interesting, but once Dabney received "the diagnosis," I almost didn't finish it. I knew something was coming, but I didn't expect that. The somber, depressing mood of the end of the story ruined my enjoyment of the rest of it. Not my kind of book at all. My next read will definitely be a comedy.

I cannot write a review of this book without first commenting on the characters' monikers. There was Dabney (also known as Cupe), Clendenin (a.k.a Beast and Clen), Box, and Celerie (why yes, this book does have a vegetarian character named after a vegetable). What planet is this version of Nantucket on? I'm all for originality, but these names are just flat-out tacky. I'm pretty sure a Mary or a Fred could live on Nantucket too, Ms. Hilderbrand.Okay, now that I've got that off my chest, let's talk about the actual story.Dabney, the protagonist, is an idiot. Without giving any plot points away, let's just say she was having obvious medical issues, which she chose to ignore...and for the dumbest reason. This book has several narrators, and includes little asides, much like the film, When Harry Met Sally, where the couples Dabney worked her matchmaking skills on told their love stories. These asides are cute, and they give a great deal of background about Dabney in high school, in college, while pregnant, and every stage of her life in between. It's clear, from the beginning of the book, where the plot is heading. There were zero surprises.Elin Hilderbrand books are so hit or miss with me. I either really enjoy them, or I don't. This one, unfortunately, was a stinker.I'd take a hard pass on The Matchmaker.

This was the first book I have ever read by Elin Hilderbrand. I received a sample of it on Kindle and recommended it to my book club. First, let me say, it was hard to read part of this book (SPOILERS) as one of the main characters is affected by and dies from cancer. This hit way too close home for me. I liked Dabney. I've known Dabneys in my life. I was not surprised that when Clendenin returned to her life, she did things that went outside of her normal character. I feel that the real Dabney was around when Clen was in her life and the one we are introduced to in the beginning is a mask that she learned to wear. I don't condone adultery but I felt that the relationship she had with her husband box was more of a friendship and partnership and not a marriage. I enjoyed all of the small stories from the couples that Dabney put together, but did not enjoy her daughter's relationship with her fiance. I loved Nantucket. It was a character all on it's own.

This is the second Elin Hildebrand I have read and I was very disappointed. The prose was flat and unimaginative and it seemed to be written on a 5th or 6th grade reading level. The characters were hardly developed beyond annoying names ("Clendenin", "Dabney", " Box", "Celerie"... really???) and unnecessarily reinforced personal habits (no one wears a pearl necklace all day every day) and repeated mentions of car models (I never say " let's take my Accord"). The main character, "Dabney" was supposed to be someone everyone loved and admired but I never saw those traits because she was never fleshed-out beyond "pearls, Impala, pearls, Imapala, headband, pearls, Impala". I am hoping that this was perhaps E.H's first novel and she got better along the way because I did enjoy the other novel of hers I read.

I usually really like Elin Hilderbrand's novels which play out on the beautiful island of Nantucket. "The Matchmaker" was unfortunately not one of my favorites. It was a bit sappy with odd, borderline silly, descriptions and a main character who was portrayed as the wonderful center of Nantucket society without whom life hardly seemed possible. Uhm, okay....The basic story idea wasn't bad and I was entertained enough while listening to the audio book in my car, but it certainly was not a masterpiece. Had I bought the actual book or e-book, I might not have read it all the way to the end as to not waste my time.

I accidentally downloaded this to my kindle. When the blizzard came, I spent the day reading it. It's a tearjerker, but if that's the mood you're then it's a good read. A little weak on plot, but the alternating points of view are an interesting device to fill in background. And it you like to eat well and have agoraphobia, an illegitimate child, a wandering lover and love Nantucket, then you will adore this book.

This book was great! I enjoyed the characters and the story. I have to say I was shocked at the way the story went and ended up balling like a blubbering baby but the story was still very good. I didn’t want that ending but we didn’t write it, Elin did!🙂

The Matchmaker, although so similar to her other Nantucket novels , has a very different feel to the experience. ( I consider each book an experience.) There were so many interesting scenes that I had not anticipated and I was pleasantly surprised. It was a great read .
