I suspect I will be returning to this book often as I work my way through the mystery novel genre. The essays are short and sweet, as all mystery novels should be. the authors of the essays briefly sets up the plotline of each of the books and then dives in quickly and ,of course, stylishly into the reason why they chose to write about that specific author and that specific book. The essays are enjoyable because the essay writers are delving into an area of their passion and they are telling you, the reader, WHY they feel this particular book is representative of the best of that author. Brilliant.

Excellent collection of essays. I would highly recommend this book to any reader looking for a new crime writer or crime novel. The contributors come from all over the world and the books go all the way back to the 19th century and go forward for over a hundred years. Interesting read. Michael Connelly on Raymond Chandler is especially thoughtful.

This is not a mystery but authors writing about other authors' mystery novels. A great idea; a clever title.1. Authors provide great insight, and some fun, each one examining their favorite work by some other mystery writer.2. I discovered some new authors whose books I'd indeed die for.

I found this book extremely informative and enjoyable. Some of the authors were new to me and others were like meeting old friends after a long absence. I will use this book as reference in the future to sample writers unknown to me,and to re-read old favorites. I would highly recommend this book. I found it best to read just a few reviews at a time. Anyone who loves mysteries will love this book

The world's leading mystery writers have, in their inimitable way, dissected some of the greatest mystery novels ever written. In a series of short essays that often reveal as much about themselves, their own work, often how they were influenced by a particular book they are still passionate about. Fascinating that these people felt so strongly about a book they read, to some it was a life changing experience. Find a writer or a book you admire and travel a little journey with them or discover how another writer found that book or person. Books to Die For is the most ambitious anthology of its kind.

Great reference for the crime/mystery genre - I liked the mix of well known works with the fairly obscure. While you may not actually read all the works reviewed, the fan will probably enjoy reading the essays about them

The title says it all: 119 authors from 20 countries share the one mystery that is the most important one they've read. With this many authors represented, there's a wide range of books being shared, and one of the joys of reading a book like this is agreeing-- or disagreeing-- with each author's choice. Each essay also tells us a bit about the author writing it, and as I read, I also found myself learning not only about the authors and the books chosen, but about the history and evolution of crime fiction as well. Books to Die For is a feast on many levels. For me, this wasn't a book that I started reading at page one and worked my way steadily through to the end. No, I had two lines of attack. One was to find my favorite authors to see what their favorite books were. Louise Penny? Josephine Tey's The Franchise Affair. Deborah Crombie? P.D. James' Cover Her Face. Ann Cleeves? Henning Mankell's The Man Who Smiled. And the list goes on.My second line of attack was to find one of my favorite books to see which author recommended it above all others. Peter Temple's The Broken Shore? John Harvey. Charles Dickens' Bleak House? Sara Paretsky. And so it goes. The reasoning behind each choice was often fascinating and illuminating. One thing that I can guarantee about reading this book is that your own reading lists will expand. I was intrigued by authors and books I'd never heard of as well as by lesser known books by authors I was very familiar with. Read Books to Die For at your own peril for you will be consumed by the hunt for more mysteries to read!

Maybe first thing necessary when dealing with 560 pages of essays involving critique and commentary of famous authors and their particular crime novels is to get to the nitty-gritty of working at a quickened pace. To my way of thinking you do that by speed-reading through chapters deemed uninteresting from the git-go.Essays of personal favored authors and their stories included: Charles Willford, Elmore Leonard, Richard Stark, Ed McBain, Ross MacDonald, George V. Higgens, and James Crumley. Then there was Geoffrey Household and Jean-Patrick Manchette. Next in line more or less (since I was jumping all over the place) was Dame Agatha Christie, Edgar Allan Poe, Wilkie Collins, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, Raymond Chandler, Patricia Highsmith, John D. MacDonald, Thomas Harris, James Sallis, Scott Smith, James Ellroy, Scott Phillips, and the master lyricist of them all... James Lee Burke.I'm not saying I ignored the rest of the authors or their works... just saying how I deal with full coverage of the material.I might add at this point that my all time personal favorite crime novel is Day of the Jackal (and I might add the novel is well represented by the editors). One thing I wished is that the editors included Robert McCammon and Dean Koontz. Mine by Robert McCammon features a tale concerning a 6' tall female former hippie and delusional sociopath killer with a penchant for stealing babies. And that novel is a classic of the genre. Then of course there is Dean Koontz and the intensity of his character: Edgler Foreman Vess. But when all is said and done, and despite the aforementioned possibly offbeat exclusions, the effort expended by the editors (and authors providing the essays) is well presented and achieved. And so far as I'm concerned, as a whole, the reading time was well spent.I thoroughly enjoyed every page of Books To Die For and each selection of story or author chosen and each comment made.

I bought this for my 10 yr old grandson but it is too young for him. The book is fine and informative but more suited to a 5-7 yr old.

Short, factual book about the white house. My seven year-old enjoyed it. There are a few pictures and plenty of fun facts.

good product

My nephew AND his parents liked this book.

Perfect for my classroom.

Perfect addition to my classroom library!

Excellent book for my son.

Fun fact filled book. It was part of my 6 year old's summer reading. I think dad and I enjoyed it just as much as our son did. I would definitely recommend this book.

Review

“Stokes makes the landscape an integral part of the story. Characters, even minor ones, are well developed, as are the subplots. With overtones of Lois Duncan’s I Know What You Did Last Summer (1973), this has the OMG quality that makes you afraid to wonder what will happen next.” (Booklist (starred review))“A character-driven mystery perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen and Deb Caletti.” (School Library Journal)“Intriguing mystery.” (Kirkus Reviews)“The twisty thriller is an enjoyable ride. The nail-biting conclusion includes a shocking surprise; readers will likely gasp when the identity of “Unknown” is revealed.” (Publishers Weekly)

Embry and Holden, not her boyfriend, hook up at an abandoned hotel, accidentally setting it ablaze. They were not alone. Someone videoed their encounter and sends Embry threatening messages. Escalating threats make finding the blackmailer essential, before somebody ends up dead.I haven’t read a thriller recently that left me holding my breath, clenching my fists and shake in a very long time. Most thrillers are more mystery than thrilling. Paula Stokes did such a great job escalating tension from the first blackmail letter to the reveal of the culprit. HIDDEN PIECES never dipped in intensity. The mystery aspect of the story had many plausible suspects, one who was the actual perp.Embry is sympathetic and complex. She cheats on her overseas boyfriend, afraid to break up with him, lies to friends and her mom and makes some stupid, but understandable decisions. Most of all, she doesn’t want to let people down or lose relationships. I adored Holden, who was also no stranger to terrible choices.Family, class, commitment and friendship are at the heart of HIDDEN PIECES. I would have read the book in one sitting, but reluctantly had to go out for a bit. HIDDEN PIECES is a slow burn that will keep you guessing until the very end. My heart is still thumping.

I really liked this. I wasn't a huge fan of the main character but I loved the setting and the story. An event (or events, depending on how you look at it) sets off a chain of blackmail texts to our main character. She is tasked with certain things, most of them containing a certain level of danger involved with threats to people she loves. We spend much of the novel trying to figure out who the blackmailer is and what their reasons are. This is where thrillers often let me down because one of two things happen: the reveal of the perp is way too predicable OR the author takes a last ditch effort and just throws something random in that does not connect to the story. NEITHER of these are the case with Hidden Pieces and I am so glad. There were a few suspicious characters with various possible motives, so it wasn't entirely predicable. And the author pulled a conclusion from her story. I've had good luck with Paula Stokes and can't wait to see her next offering!

This was such a good YA thriller and mystery. I don’t find too many well written and thought out thrillers in YA and this one was both of those things. The characters were relatable and well fleshed out. They felt like teens which sometimes when I read YA the characters don’t come across as actual teens even if that’s what the author is intending, but Paula made me believe I was reading about teens with what they did and said. It all felt very authentic to the teenage experience. I loved the setting and descriptions of the area because it really connected me to the story and made me visualize it as I was reading. I did suspect who did the blackmailing but through the course of the book I began to doubt myself and even though who I thought did it did do it, how it was revealed and the why were surprises for me. I loved the book and highly recommend it!

Embry is not a good person. After deciding to put her relationship with her boyfriend Luke on hold, she decided to hook up with Holden. But there’s a problem: Holden was dating Embry’s best friend Julia at the time. While Holden did break up with her, Embry still hasn’t admitted to Julia that she was the person that Holden hooked up with–nor has she stopped. After Embry’s and Holden’s misadventure results in setting the Sea Cliff Inn on fire by accident, she suddenly finds herself thrust into small town fame after she ran back into the hotel to save a homeless man. No one knows that she’s responsible for the fire.Until the letter comes demanding that she either admit to everything that happened on Facebook or the person will ruin the life of someone that she cares about.Embry chooses the second option. And what ensues is a dangerous game of lies and putting those she loves into danger to keep the secret hidden. This was an excellent YA thriller. I’ve heard some other people complain that it was obvious to them who was behind the letter and messages, but honestly, I had no idea until the very end. And even if so, I still think there’s fun within the journey anyway.Additionally, I thought that this had a very realistic portrayal of poverty. For example, Embry’s family (just her mom) could only afford to live in that town because the mortgage had been significantly paid off when they inherited the house. They struggle to pay bills. There’s a tension that comes from knowing that her friend Julia can simply buy what she wants while Embry cannot. At one point, Embry does not want to go the hospital when she should because it would be just another bill that her family would be in debt for. There’s not a lot of YA books that feature characters like this, and I think this may be the actual first one that I remember that specifically mentions that a character gets free breakfast and lunch at school.Definitely a worthwhile read.
