Review

"A riveting and original book that challenges key tenets of American political faith." —The Baltimore Sun“World on Fire deserves to be widely read. It is a welcome antidote to the recycled mantras of the market-cheering right and the tired rhetoric of the anti-globalization left.” —The American Prospect “Fascinating and disturbing . . . with an authority born of rigorous research.” —BusinessWeek "Provocative, evocative, nuanced, and highly readable. . . . Amy Chua deserves our gratitude." —The Washington Post "Superb. . . . Encourages us to confront the world as it is, and our actual place in it, with a humane and intellectually formidable imagination." —The New York Observer “This hard-hitting book should be read by everyone who still imagines that free markets can solve all the world’s ills. Chua’s work is provocative, creative, and important; it turns conventional wisdom on its head, and no one interested in globalization can afford to ignore it.”—Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By In America “Provocative. . . . Shocking. . . . It should make Americans think twice about exporting their political culture wholesale without a thought of who dislikes whom.”—Seattle Times “[World on Fire] makes for compelling reading and sounds a sobering warning that should be heeded by all supporters and critics of globalization.” —Milwaukee Journal–Sentinel “A profound book, written in plain English, and challenging the very foundations of some glib—and dangerous—assumptions behind American foreign policy. This book should be read in the highest circles of decision-making, as well as by all those who like to consider themselves ‘thinking people.’ It should provoke some re-thinking—and, for some, really thinking for the first time.”—Thomas Sowell, Hoover Institution, and author of Ethnic America, Race and Culture “A brilliant, groundbreaking assault on the prevailing wisdom that the American political and economic model is a one-stop solution to the world’s woes.” —Elle “Grim and thoughtful. . . . A clear-headed incisive diagnosis of the many ethnic ills of the globalizing era.” —Mother Jones “Clear and persuasive. . . . Chua is a careful, precise writer.” —Salon “Chua’s book is a lucid, powerfully argued, and important contribution to the debate over the forces and factors shaping the twenty-first century world.” —Strobe Talbott, President, The Brookings Institution, and author of The Age of Terror: America and the World After September 11 “A cogent analysis...convincingly reason[ed].”—The Boston Herald “Chua offers a fundamentally new perspective on how to help sustain globalization by spreading its benefits while curbing its most destructive aspects. . . . Compelling.” —The Tampa Tribune “Remarkably illuminating. . . . I cannot think of another work over the past couple of decades that reveals more about the disturbing persistence internationally of racial and ethnic conflicts.” —Randall Kennedy, author of Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word “Drawing on examples from Burma to Bolivia, Chua paints a nuanced picture of ethnic and national fault lines. . . . [She] fleshes out the idea that globalization is not a magical elixir for developing nations.” —Newsweek “A barrage of examples supports Chua’s thesis, each described with careful consideration of the different circumstances of different nations. . . . [T]old with a dramatic flair. . .” – The Weekly Standard “The greatest tribute to any book is the conviction upon closing it that the senseless finally makes sense. That’s the feeling left by Amy Chua’s World on Fire.” —The Washington Post

From the Inside Flap

For over a decade now, the reigning consensus has held that the combination of free markets and democracy would transform the third world and sweep away the ethnic hatred and religious zealotry associated with underdevelopment. In this astute, original, and surprising investigation of the true impact of globalization, Yale Law School professor Amy Chua explains why many developing countries are in fact consumed by ethnic violence after adopting free market democracy. Chua shows how in non-Western countries around the globe, free markets have concentrated starkly disproportionate wealth in the hands of a resented ethnic minority. These "market-dominant minorities" - Chinese in Southeast Asia, Croatians in the former Yugoslavia, whites in Latin America and South Africa, Indians in East Africa, Lebanese in West Africa, Jews in post-communist Russia - become objects of violent hatred. At the same time, democracy empowers the impoverished majority, unleashing ethnic demagoguery, confiscation, and sometimes genocidal revenge. She also argues that the United States has become the world's most visible market-dominant minority, a fact that helps explain the rising tide of anti-Americanism around the world. Chua is a friend of globalization, but she urges us to find ways to spread its benefits and curb its most destructive aspects.

Professor Chua's hypothesis, that the sudden introduction of free market liberalization and democracy often serve contradictory ends and have unintended consequences is thought-provoking, well researched and cogently expressed. At times however, the book seems less like a scholarly examination than a polemic (endlessly repeated) and the solutions offered are so general that they lose potency. Despite these caveats, this is book well worth reading, as it presents a context within which to consider more specific development plans and longer-term intercession efforts.

World on Fire is an in-depth look at the harm of globalization, marketization, and democratization of developing nations with a market dominant minority. Yes, I know that’s a mouthful and to an amateur eye, such as my own, it immediately looks intimidating and boring. Yes, there are some boring parts but I think Amy Chua does a superb job of presenting sufficient data and examples to elucidate her point. To be fair, I was introduced to these terms in a newer book of Amy Chua’s titled: Political Tribes. I loved that book so much I wanted to purchase other Chua works.Like a good lawyer Chua brings a preponderance of evidence to support her postulations. It makes the book dense to be sure but it leaves little room for a varying or opposing opinion. The data along with the anecdotal evidence paint a grim picture yet also offers a viable explanation for the awfully violent eruptions around the globe. But let me warm the book up a little bit with some brief definitions of the principal terms.Globalization: Essentially the opening of the country to foreign companies and investors.Marketization: The moving of the economy to a free-market type economy. Think capitalism.Democratization: Self-explanatory. Offering universal suffrage allowing all citizens to vote for their leaders.Market-dominant minorities: Usually ethnic minorities in a nation who dominate the economy such as Chinese in South Asia, Indians in east Africa, Lebanese in west Africa, whites in South Africa, whites in Latin America and other examples. When all of these ingredients are mixed together they create a very combustible concoction that often times results in an explosion of ethnic resentment or worse. The globalization and marketization create the enormous disparities in wealth between the foreign market-dominant minorities haves and the indigenous majority have-nots. Then the advent of a democracy gives power to that abject majority. Add a demagogue to stoke the fears and anger of that majority and BOOM!As Amy puts it:

“Today’s bloody confiscations and the resulting economic collapse are the direct product of the collision between free markets and democratic politics.”She repeatedly makes it clear though that this is not the only cause of ethnic hatred and ethnic violence such as that in Rwanda, Jakarta, and Yugoslavia, but these conditions make the country ripe for such hatred and violence. The book is replete with reports from around the globe dealing with the outcries of a poor majority. But Amy Chua doesn’t just chuck this depression grenade to sit back and watch the reaction; she also brings forth some novel solutions. It is a very thorough, complete work that at the very least gives pause.

Anyone and everyone who has enough money to buy this book should read it. This is because anyone who reads and orders books online is, whether they recognize it or not, an "Ethnic Dominant Minority" and thus a key subject of this book. If you are from the U.S. you may ask "why do other countries hate us, but some still want to come live in the U.S.A.?" If you wonder why simple democracy isn't working in so many countries... just read on... it will be an eye opener. At the end of the book there are examples of what has been done to help alleviate this problem. It is not a simple problem and the solution isn't simple. But like story of the boy throwing saving one starfish by tossing it back into the sea, every time we act to improve the lifes of those who are not in our social circle we can say, "It matters to this one."

Amy Chua tackles tough topics typically avoided at cocktail parties such as...Why do American's love to mythologize the 'worldwide Jewish banking cartel'?Why are 6 out of the 7 richest new Russian oligarchs Jewish? Are Chinese students smarter than American students? Will the Chinese similarly out-compete Americans at jobs? Why do African-American families not stand a chance competing with white families on a 'fair and level playing field' in building generational wealth? Why did Hindii nationalists massacre between 1,000 and 2,000 Muslim civilians in Gujarat province in India in 2002? Why did the worlds' largest democracy then elevate the leader of Gujarat province to Prime Minister of India in 2014?Chua answers all of these questions with fast-moving, clear prose. She adds lurid storytelling, some of it personal, to flesh-out why America's greatest export - democracy - is causing us all to live in a world on fire.Tim

The Book of Woe: The DSM and the Unmaking of Psychiatry, by Gary Greenberg

Review

“[I]ndustrious and perfervid... Mr. Greenberg [argues] that the [DSM] and its authors, the American Psychiatric Association, wield their power arbitrarily and often unwisely, encouraging the diagnosis of too many bogus mental illnesses in patients (binge eating disorder, for example) and too much medication to treat them....Mr. Greenberg argues that psychiatry needs to become more humble, not more certain and aggressive....Greenberg is a fresher, funnier writer. He paces the psychiatric stage as if he were part George Carlin, part Gregory House.”—Dwight Garner, The New York Times “Greenberg’s documentation of the DSM-5 revision process is an essential read for practicing and in-training psychotherapists and psychiatrists and is an important contribution to the history of psychiatry.”—Library Journal“The rewriting of the bible of psychiatry shakes the field to its foundations in this savvy, searching exposé.  Deploying wised-up, droll reportage from the trenches of psychiatric policy-making and caustic profiles of the discipline’s luminaries, Greenberg subjects the practices of the mental health industry—his own included—to a withering critique. The result is a compelling insider’s challenge to psychiatry’s scientific pretensions—and a plea to return it to its humanistic roots.”—Publisher’s Weekly, starred review“Greenberg is an entertaining guide through the treacheries and valuable instances of the DSM, interviewing members on both sides of the divide and keeping the proceedings conversational even when discussing the manual’s pretensions toward epistemic iteration. He also brings his own practice into [The Book of Woe], with examples of the DSM falling woefully short in capturing the complexity of personality. Bright, humorous and seriously thoroughgoing, Greenberg takes all the DSMs for a spin as revealing as the emperor’s new clothes.”—Kirkus Reviews“[A] brilliant look at the making of DSM-5...entertaining, biting and essential...Greenberg builds a splendid and horrifying read....[he] shows us vividly that psychiatry’s biggest problem may be a stubborn reluctance to admit its immaturity.”—David Dobbs, Nature.com“Gary Greenberg is a thoughtful comedian and a cranky philosopher and a humble pest of a reporter, equal parts Woody Allen, Kierkegaard, and Columbo. The Book of Woe is a profound, and profoundly entertaining, riff on malady, power, and truth. This book is for those of us (i.e., all of us) who've ever wondered what it means, and what's at stake, when we try to distinguish the suffering of the ill from the suffering of the human.”—Gideon Lewis-Kraus, author of A Sense of Direction“This could be titled The Book of ... Whoa! An eye-popping look at the unnerving, often tawdry politics of psychiatry.”—Gene Weingarten, two-time Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Fiddler in the Subway“Bringing the full force of his wit, warmth, and tenacity to this accessible inside account of the latest revision of psychiatry’s diagnostic bible, Gary Greenberg has written a book to rival the importance of its subject. Keenly researched and vividly reported, The Book of Woe is frank, impassioned, on fire for the truth—and best of all, vigorously, beautifully alive to its story’s human stakes.”—Michelle Orange, author of This Is Running for Your Life “Gary Greenberg has become the Dante of our psychiatric age, and the DSM-5 is his Inferno. He guides us through the not-so-divine comedy that results when psychiatrists attempt to reduce our hopelessly complex inner worlds to an arbitrary taxonomy that provides a disorder for everybody. Greenberg leads us into depths that Dante never dreamed of. The Book of Woe is a mad chronicle of so-called madness.”—Errol Morris, Academy Award–winning director, and author of A Wilderness of Error  “In this gripping, devastating account of psychiatric hubris, Gary Greenberg shows that the process of revising the DSM remains as haphazard and chaotic as ever. His meticulous research into the many failures of DSM-5 will spark concern, even alarm, but in doing so will rule out complacency. The Book of Woe deserves a very wide readership.”—Christopher Lane, author of Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness“Gary Greenberg’s The Book of Woe is about the DSM in the way that Moby-Dick is about a whale—big-time, but only in part. An engaging history of a profession’s virtual bible, The Book of Woe is also a probing consideration of those psychic depths we cannot know and those social realities we pretend not to know, memorably rendered by a seasoned journalist who parses the complexities with a pickpocket’s eye and a mensch’s heart.  If I wanted a therapist, and especially if I wanted to clear my mind of cant, I’d make an appointment with Dr. Greenberg as soon as he could fit me in.”—Garret Keizer, author of Privacy and The Unwanted Sound of Everything We Want “The Book of Woe is a brilliant, ballsy excursion into the minefield of modern psychiatry. Greenberg has wit, energy, and a wonderfully skeptical mind. If you want to understand how we think of mental suffering today—and why, and to what effect—read this book.”—Daniel Smith, author of Monkey Mind“[Greenberg’s] fascinating history of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (the DSM)...show[s] just how muddled the boundaries of mental health truly are.”—Chloë Schama, Smithsonian“Greenberg argues persuasively that the current DSM encourages psychiatrists to reach beyond their competence....I’m impressed by Greenberg’s reporting, his subtlety of thought, his dedication to honesty, and his literacy....a very good book.”—Benjamin Nugent, Slate.com“The process of assembling [DSM-5] has been anything but smooth, as The Book of Woe relates....Greenberg argues—persuasively—that this fifth edition of the DSM arises not out of any new scientific understanding but from one of the periodic crises of psychiatry....invaluable.”—Laura Miller, Salon.com“In The Book of Woe, Greenberg takes the lay reader through a history of the DSM, which is really a history of psychiatry....[a] fascinating and well-researched account.”—Suzanne Koven, The Boston Globe“[E]ngaging, radical and generally delectable...Greenberg is a practicing psychotherapist who writes with the insight of a professional and the panache of a literary journalist....[a] brilliant take-down of the psychiatric profession...The Book of Woe offers a lucid and useful history.”—Julia M. Klein, The Chicago Tribune“This is a landmark book about a landmark book....Greenberg paints a picture so compelling and bleak that it could easily send the vulnerable reader into therapy....takes the reader deep inside the secretive world of the panels and personalities that have spent years arguing about which disorders and symptoms they would keep and which they would discard in the new DSM.”—Robert Epstein, Scientific American

Gary Greenberg gets it right and dishes it out on a sumptuous platter of history with a whole lotta gentle direct humor woven through his very exposing/disclosing book. In a down to earth readable style (not psychedelic, psychiatric, psycho, academic bureaucratic mumble jumble jargon) he's drawn the curtain back and exposed the Wizard of Id? Or maybe the Wizard of Ego? The Wizard of War? The DSM-5; a book written by committee; members who sit around a table every so many years and make up stuff, a book that has no scientific basis. We had to study the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) when I was in graduate school (and who didn't like looking up what was wrong with their family members and self-diagnosing themselves?). It's merely a checklist of symptoms, not causation, not a mental health diagnosis, not a scientific diagnosis, not a medical diagnosis. "Check, check, check, check." "OK now this is who you are." Then a few years down the line: "Check, check, oh?" "OK now you're not that anymore".And it's very political. "Combat fatigue" was taken out at the height of the Vietnam War. It was veterans who studied then lobbied to get "post traumatic stress" in not only for themselves but also for children who were horribly abused. That is a label that at least speaks to causation. Then homosexuals lobbied to get "homosexuality" out, now "transgendered" want to be kept in.Greenberg lays out the history of the DSM, it's pioneering characters including its subsequent characters who now say "oops", but to his credit the author exposes the story and the behind the scenes of the story, treats the history in a respectful but direct way using humor; making them into people, not gurus who have the holy seeing as to who you are based on a checklist.I didn't know until reading Greenberg's book that out of the history of slavery came one of the first sort of DSM labels. That slaves running away was a mental disorder. If that doesn't say it all about so-called mental illness. If you don't accept the horrible conditions of your life you are mentally ill! "Now take these drugs!" In the new DSM book, in the DSM-5 if you grieve longer than two weeks for a loved one's death you are officially mentally ill.Greenberg lays out the money issue as to why now? Why now revamp the DSM? Why now? Because the American Psychiatric Association (APA) is in need of money. With all the criticism they were getting for drug money flowing into their coffers as well as the drug companies doing trainings for the APA, for drugging the hell out of our kids, the APA greatly reduced the drug money connection. The DSM is their best selling book. They need the money but as the reviews on the DSM-5 show anyone can get the "diagnosis" and "code numbers" on line, free from which to do their insurance billing. DSM-5 not needed.Greenberg's description of the "committee work" I found hilarious and sad for it is exactly the same process I witnessed of the government re-writing the health, safety and well-being of children in day care regulations. It went on forever and the main folks advocating for no safety rules were some of the day care providers with the poor histories of providing care to children. Then like the DSM committee work it all went on line for public comment. The committee work Greenberg watched in action and the committee I watched in action were the similar dynamic although because a couple of us die hard advocates were on the committee the government did at least on paper a better job of keeping safety regulations. And yes, like Greenberg witnessed with his committee, the day care regulation committee also tried to keep their meetings secret and attempted to take away the first amendment rights of us advocates who spoke to the media.Where did this phenomenon start coalescing from in history? Once again it looks like from the Germans and a guy named Emil Kraepelin in the mid 1800s (which is where and when the whole public education system started) and by the end of the 1800s started the classification system, his "neat categories of mental illness".But it was really war that jumped the gun into providing a warm petri dish in which psychiatrists were grown and thrust out into the world to try to stop soldiers returning from war from having emotional reactions about their experiences, well maybe not stop the emotional reactions but to deny they had anything to do with war. 1952 the year the DSM first got published was the year that Dr. Ewan Cameron was the president of the APA. Working out of Canada for the C.I.A. he headed up the MKULTRA program up there Where they experimented on children (see "The Franklin Cover Up"). 1952 was the year the USA got schizophrenia. Out of war sprang our modern mental health (cover up) systems.Lloyd de Mause and Alice Miller probably had the most direct diagnosis for our modern era in that "all war is about child abuse" but I don't think the author reviewed that aspect of our modern mental illness. Maybe his next book?A great read, a fun read, many laughing out loud moments. Laughing takes power and control away from those insisting that their way makes sense, only makes sense, it's the only way if you will only obey them. Please read and enjoy this book.

For anyone (therapists and laypersons alike) who has ever read parts of the DSM (any version) and come away suspecting that they themselves could readily receive a large number of the diagnoses described, depending upon the day, Gary Greenberg has addressed these concerns eloquently. As a therapist working in the field for more than 17 years, I have felt my anger rise steadily at the reductionist hubris presented as fact by proponents of the medical model of human distress. Greenberg's expose links the history of psychiatry, with its relentless pursuit of theoretical and financial legitimacy through medicalization, to the reductionism inherent in this paradigm. Although the topic of Big Pharma's contributions to the medicalization of psychiatry is mentioned in the book, it is not Greensberg's focus and should be expanded upon, given the market-driven nature of nearly all aspects of our current culture. At times, the seemingly endless debates among those involved in the DSM5 project was heavy reading, and I was tempted to skim several chapters in the book. But for the most part, it reads like a spy novel - complete with secrets, conspiracy theories, and betrayals- leaving the reader wondering just whose side people are on, or indeed, what exactly those sides represent, particularly for people seeking help for what is termed, "mental illness." Overall, Greenberg is successful in his efforts to invite the reader to share his critical look at psychiatry and its attempts to reduce human suffering to quantifiable and reimbursable categories. He reminds us that, so far, the human mind remains a mystery, and more than the sum of its biological parts.

“Mental illness is not real, but let’s pretend it is” : DSM5You might think the title or my review is an exaggeration or misstatement of the raison d’etre for any DSM but in fact one of the tenets of this volume, the DSM 5, as well as Book of Woe, is that in fact mental illnesses are artificial and artificially constructed categories that have no reality. Psychiatrists are counseled, within the manual’s pages, against the “reification” of mental disease, that is, turning what is a concept into a real thing, even as the entire DSM purports to describe “reality” in terms like “schizophrenia” and “bipolar disorder” as well as other “oppositional defiant disorder” and other questionable maladies of modern living.Book of Woe is a history of the development of DSM 5 but it is also a fundamentally a critique of Psychiatry, even as the author, a psychologist, confesses he benefits financially from using the very manual he (mostly) disparages.Well-written and even entertaining, this book is a must read and an eye opener for anyone who has ever trusted their psychiatrist to know what she or he is doing when making a diagnosis.

In this book, the author shares her research and experiences with role playing games and explores how such games can be used to explore different identities. I found this to be an intriguing exploration of role-playing games and how people use them to explore their identities as well as how they are used by society in general for problem solving. The author does an excellent job of showing the breadth of role-playing games, and the various uses they are put to. This is an excellent book to read to understand identity alteration and how the assumption of different roles allows people to explore who they are in relationship to the characters they create and become. The author also provides some useful insights via Jungian theory on archetypes and identity that can be helpful for understanding the psychology of role playing games.

(Full disclosure: The author is a friend of mine, we discuss subjects from the contents of this book so I thought I'd give it a read to catch up on her theories and have more enlightened discussions)This book is an excellent, well thought out dive into the minds behind roleplaying games. It does a great job of explaining the background of the subject to bring uninitiated readers up to speed. I'm not a huge reader of non-fiction, and especially not something this in-depth into something I am a huge participant in (I've been roleplaying nearly my entire life). But I never found this book boring or too dry for my liking.I came away with a much better understanding of the different things that attract different types of people to roleplaying, rather than just understanding my own stance. And as something of a hobbyist roleplaying scholar, I believe this book is a great addition to my references.

This book is easy to read and understand. Sarah gets her point across in each chapter by introducing what she is about to talk about and then ends with a nice short summary on what she just wrote about. Role Playing is something i am not to entirely interested, in the physical realm, but she does touch base on the internet world and how MMO's have made a great impact on our culture.

Easy-to-read study on role-playing games. Contains useful theoretical content, in a manner that is digestible and considered. Pleasantly laid out, and relatable.

Bowman's work is a mixed bag for me. I applaud her exploration of the meaning that RPG players get out of creating and enacting their characters, and the final chapter presents some interesting ideas about how players create characters and the relationships between players and characters. However, her view of role-playing as a gaming experience is very psychoanalytic and is full of Freudian concepts that have received mixed (at best) empirical support generally. I don't think we need to talk about defense mechanisms or Dissociative Identity Disorder to gain insight about the gameplay experiences of these players. My other primary criticism is that her sample is not representative of the wider population of RPG players. Most are young (all but 2 out of 19 are 30 or younger) and primarily playing White Wolf RPGs and I think this colors the conclusions she draws about how immersed the players get in their characters. I don't have a problem with this per se, as any one investigation will not capture all aspects of a phenomenon. But her theories and ideas are not likely to hold up to the experiences of those who play in other RPG systems or other demographics.

Some interesting notions but could be seen as outdated.

Used for intro to computer mediated communication. Lots of good insight into why role-playing is an enjoyable pastime for some.

The Functions of Role-Playing Games is an expanded public version of the author's PhD thesis, and that definitely shows in the wealth of references and the scope of the work. Practically all of the central themes of current-day role-playing research are there, in one form or another: Character-player relationships, educational games (including simulations), historical connections, definition, role-playing as a kind of ritual, and skill development via play. This means two things. One, that this is a great place to start on role-playing research, and should actually be mandatory reading for any beginning role-playing scholar. Two, due to the limited space and lack of certain references, the author never dips really deeply into any of the subjects. This is the book's key advantage and disadvantage. On one hand, it's a great base to build upon, leaving space for further research without blocking anything, and a real eye-opener on just how much "role-playing" actually encompasses. On the other hand, with certain resources more (such as Henriksen, Morton and Montola) to draw upon, it would have been way more impressive.Dr. Bowman has nevertheless definitely written a key reference for the future, possibly the next "Fine" all of us will have to cite from now on. That is highly applaudable. Certain parts of it I found somewhat boring, but I presume that was mostly because I personally did not need those things (e.g. the systems of D&D or Vampire) explained to such great detail, not because of any fault of the author. She does generalize a lot based on her small group of interviewees, but is always careful to report that she is dealing with probabilities or is making assumptions that may be one-sided. The author's assessment of reliabilities regarding her findings seems very, very solid. Her approach to defining role-playing communities seems a bit alien to a Nordic game researcher, given differences in play culture, but that too is just fruitful grounds for further research. All in all, this is a necessary, broadly based and well-written addition to role-playing research. It's basically a must-read for any scholar in the field, especially those pondering where to start or whether something within it has already been studied to some extent. It nevertheless gets just four stars from me, because I can see how by taking into account a dozen extra references it could have been magnificent instead of just really great.

Dinsey pin collecters and traders will enjoy seeing all the pictures in this book. It is the best source for info on the pins but being the only source, they don't have to be that good to be successful.Criticisms include the fact that they don't list ALL the pins- you have to buy more stuff to get info on the overseas them park pins, Disney store pins, online pins, and others. Finding a pin can be very difficult also as their index is unclear on many items. You have to know where the pin was released to find it in the book and many of us won't guess right on that question. Some of us would like the pictures in the book to be a little bit bigger, too. A final criticism is the price of the book for the numbers of pages- it's expensive. For someone who collects, the book is indispensable but it is a very imperfect work.

This is a good book if you are into pin trading. My family and I were just into pin trading the one week we were in Disney World and have put the hobby aside since returning home. This book was very good for general information about the pins we ended up with. The book outlines the history of how pin trading has evolved, explains what pins are traded where, and explains the different categories that determine price. It also has a lot of detailed, color pictures that are fun to look at and study for future vacations to WDW. I'd recommend this text to friends, and I'd also recommend this Seller. Book arrived promptly as expected in perfect condition.

My children became enthralled with pin collecting during our first trip to Disney. When we came home, I ordered this book to help us determine the value of what we had purchased as well as what we had traded. The book was extremely helpful in our quest. When we visited the second time, we had an even better idea of what to look for in terms of pins.

Not as complete as I was hoping. Purchased as gift and showed aA good variety of pins but not comprehensive. Binding snapped and pages fell out as soon as started to read this.

I purchased a later edition of this book at the DisneyWorld Park only to find that not many of my pins were listed. This book is an earlier edition and I found most of my pins that I've been collecting. I loved finding out what they are worth.

This is a great book with many many pins. The only down side is that it does not tell you which pins are in a set. Some of the ones we have were in different places in the book. Over all it was cool to be able to find our pins and see what they were worth.

For the people who complained about the lack of index... how could anyone possibly index that many pins. The index would be as long as the book is. The table of contents is perfectly adequate for narrowing down the page. After that the hunt for the pin is half the fun.

This is an amazing book!!! Bought it because I was just starting to collect and has been wonderful. So full of information beyond the prices.

Amazon.com Review

If there ever was a pair of docs who can make the small intestine seem truly intriguing, here they are. Dr. Mehmet Oz is an alternative-medicine maverick and a cardiologist known to implement acupuncture during open-heart surgery. Dr. Michael Roizen developed the RealAge concept of calculating one's biological, as opposed to chronological, age. Here they've whipped up a witty guide to the workings of the entire body, appropriate not just for those who can't tell their pancreas from their pituitary. Even CheersÂ’ Cliff Claven types who think they know it all will likely be humbled by the 50-question "body-quotient" quiz that starts off the book. With much sassy humor (they describe the adrenals as similar in shape to Mr. Potato Head's hat), they give a guided tour of the body's anatomy and major systems (hormonal, nervous, digestive, sensory, etc.) including plenty of fascinating trivia along the way. How often should you get your thyroid level checked? How much gas does the average person produce in a day? And, most important, how many times a year do most people have sex?? Drs. Oz and Roizen know. They also reveal plenty of bizarre (and potentially life-saving) facts such as this: If your earlobe has a prominent vertical wrinkle, it's likely that your arteries are aging faster than they ought to be. If only 8th-grade health class had been this fun. The docs' main goal in presenting all this info is twofold: first, it's your body, so shouldn't you finally learn how it works? And, second, they want to help teach ways of preserving the body's health and youthfulness. To that end, they've included an "Owner's Manual Diet," a 10-day menu plan designed not for weight loss, but to make you feel "years younger." Its simple recipes are each meant to benefit a certain body system, such as Tomato Bruschetta, packed with the antioxidant lycopene, which has been proven to boost immunity. --Erica Jorgensen

From Publishers Weekly

Anti-aging guru Roizen and celebrated heart surgeon Oz combine their popular approaches to patient-centered care in this assessment of how much, or more to the point, how little, readers know about their bodies. After taking the quizzes in the book, readers may feel shocked by their ignorance of basic anatomy and the processes required to maintain physical and mental functioning. Each chapter focuses on a body part or system (heart, brain, digestive, reproductive, etc.) and discusses diseases associated with it; genetic and lifestyle influences on its aging process; and foods, supplements and habits that can prevent or reverse related illnesses. The book has an entertaining feel: friendly elves guide readers through illustrations of the body and cartoons feature alien creatures that enter the body and cause illness. The humor is irreverent (e.g., muscle cells surrounding dead heart tissue "start fighting with each other, like Jerry Springer's guests, instead of supporting each other, like Oprah's" [incidentally, the authors will appear on Oprah in May to promote the book]). Despite a 10-day, 30-recipe food plan and a less-is-more exercise regime, however, readers may have trouble using the information to create a lifestyle that will fulfill the authors' promise of weight loss, disease prevention and longevity. Even the recipes target one specific area of the body and weaken the overall conceptual framework. This lighthearted book will be most useful to those who like their health lessons served with a side of humor. (May 1) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. This book appeared in my life (via airport bookstore) by chance just before a diagnosis of thyroid cancer. Because this book is a strong advocate of advocating for yourself in the medical system, and because it is put out by The Joint Commission, an establishment medical group and because it strongly advocates getting a second or third opinion -- I had the courage and the how-to knowledge to find the best treatment for me.The first surgeon recommended "the standard" -- removing the entire thyroid, giving my whole body so much radiation even hospital personnel would not be allowed in my room for days, requiring thyroid replacement drugs for the rest of my life, and discontinuing it once every six months, causing a twice-yearly depression. I ended up with only the part with the cancer lump removed, and therefore no radiation at all, and enough thyroid gland left to adjust and supply what I need -- so no medication, and no depression. Thyroid medication is notoriously tricky to get adjusted correctly -- but my own body has done it perfectly. This was in 2006 and I am still cancer-free. As the second surgeon said, "So you want to know what the extra risk is if you only have the cancer removed? None. Because if that doesn't work, you can still go back and so the standard treatment." Even I have to someday -- I have had six+ years of good health with no need for medications. My life would have been so much more difficult had I gone with the first surgeon's recommended "standard of care" treatment. It was a lot more work -- at first. I took two weeks off work and studied my options. It would have been easier to just do what the surgeon said. But in the end, my quality of life is sooo much better than if I had not had this book to cheer me on and give me the courage and tools to find the best care for me.UPDATE, May 2017 -- Still cancer free, still no meds, still feeling great! Still grateful this book gave me the guts to advocate for myself!

My husband and I are turning 40 this year. We decided we needed to start taking better care of ourselves. How cliche, right? Well, it happens that way. It does for many. It has for us.I find Dr. Oz's delivery so danged easy to digest and understand. I don't feel insulted by his delivery. I don't feel as if he's dumbing it down for me, because he assumes I'm a moron, and I don't feel like he swings the other direction and feels as if he has something to prove, so he writes so far above all our heads that the material becomes thick and difficult. This book reads effortlessly. And man, does he fill it full of things you should know, but never think about. I liked this book so much I started reading it aloud to my husband. My husband was impressed enough with the material and delivery that he was interested enough to read it with me. We read this aloud in our down time - while we're cooking dinner, or lounging around. It's helping us understand our bodies better, and take seriously the change we need to make to help ourselves live better. I don't care about living to see 100. I do care about living independently, and without crippling health problems for the time I am here. This book is our favorite health-related book. Oz is a charming guy. I'm thrilled with this purchase.

I've had this book for a few years now. If you took anatomy classes in college, had a couple of biology courses, have been reading up on nutrition for years, and are a physical trainer, you may find the book too simple for the information you're wanting. But this book is great at explaining in ordinary words to the average person how the body works and what we should do, or not do, to maintain it like you maintain a car. It's a little light on the exercise parts, but that's because it's an allover body book and just gives you the basics for maintaining optimum health. So you get just the basics and minimum of exercise you need, and it provides those exercises. It's written with humor and plenty of illustrations, serious and humorous. Even though some sections were a little simplistic for me, I still found the explanations and illustrations interesting, informative, and humorous. Don't let the fact that the two doctors make money from writing and television. They are legit doctors. Dr. Oz is a cardiologist and still practices medicine. Dr. Oz is not associated with big pharma in any way, to my knowledge, as stated by another reviewer. Because someone is not only smart and accomplished, but also wealthy and famous, does not necessarily make him an idiot or unethical. If you are concerned with becoming healthy or maintaining good health, this is an excellent, down to earth guide for that. It won't tell you to start training for a marathon, or eat nothing but raw food. Nothing extreme here. This is a common sense manual for the average person who wants to be healthy. I highly recommend it for yourself or as a gift.

I find medical advice to be confusing. Many doctors struggle to explain things in terms I can understand and there is so much conflicting information out there. I found the metaphors used in this book to be enlightening and helpful in understanding what’s happening inside me. I also found the advice to be fairly common sense and actionable. I’m looking forward to reading other books in the owner’s manual series.
