“Play Winning Chess†is the first in a series of “Winning Chess†books co-authored by American International Grandmaster Yasser Seirawan and American International Master Jeremy Silman. It is an altogether excellent book that does a wonderful job of instructing beginners on how to play chess.I usually don’t purchase books intended for beginning chess players, but since “Play Winning Chess†is the first in a progressive series of books (the others being “Winning Chess Tactics,†“Winning Chess Strategies,†“Winning Chess Combinations,†“Winning Chess Openings,†and “Winning Chess Endingsâ€), I decided to begin with the basics. I’m glad I did. What most impresses me about this book is how very well written it is. Seirawan and Silman are both exceptionally knowledgeable writers who convey their ideas with clarity, precision, and humor. Seirawan and Silman's prose reminds me a little of the late, great chess author Fred Reinfeld’s writing, and I consider that to be high praise indeed.“Play Winning Chess†is a very well-organized book. After covering the history and basic rules of chess, the authors explain their concepts with simplicity, according to four time-tested basic principles that will lead aspiring chess players to play winning chess. The four principles are: Force, Time, Space, and Pawn Structure. Using examples from games they played, Seirawan and Silman illustrate these principles in a clear and easily understandable manner. The book contains a bounty of diagrams to help illustrate the author’s points. However, the diagrams in the Kindle versions tend to be a bit on the small side.“Play Winning Chess†is perhaps the best novice player’s chess book I’ve ever read. It belongs in every serious beginner’s library. Highly recommended.
This in an introductory, first chess book targeted to the beginner-novice player. It focuses on explaining what GM Seirawan posits to be the four primary principles of chess – Force, Time, Space and Pawn Structure. Understanding how to properly evaluate and use these principles will enable the player to formulate plans and strategies to significantly improve his/her chances for a successful result in their games. The importance of the concepts introduced in this instructive book cannot be overstated. In fact, I consider this book to be a MUST-READ for every beginner whose goal is to play better chess! If you're serious about wanting to learn to play good chess - START HERE!!
This is an excellent book and introduces the reader to the basic principles such as force, time, space and pawn structure. I would definitely recommend this book to not only the beginners in the game but also to those who have been playing chess for a while but have not gone through any good material for understanding the basic principles. There are times when players are stuck in deciding their next move but application of these principles help in not only deciding the moves but also help avoid moves which can seriously jeopardize a player's position.
I played when I was in middle school (we called that Jr. High School back then!) … now 45 years later I thought it would be fun to get back into the game and bought this book to help me jump start the learning process … its excellent! I recently played a co-worker who has played much more recently than I and dare I say, I played much better than I thought I would - because I paid attention to controlling the center of the board, maneuvering my attacks to take advantage of bridging, NOT going for sly traps of sacrificed pieces without first figuring out why my opponent offered the sacrifice, controlling board space and in particular controlling lanes for my rooks, bishops, and queen, and finally valuing pawns as highly as the other pieces rather than useless sacrifice pieces. That game lasted over 2 hours and IT WAS INCREDIBLE. I play weekly with a number of coworkers currently … I win more than I lose, but I hold my own and have nothing to be ashamed of in my playmanship. Now that this book is finished its time to choose one other book in the series ... if the others make as much of a difference in my playing as this one did ...
This author is an entertaining writer for subject matter that can be quite dry and clinical. He breaks down solid tactical elements into understandable chunks for easy digestion and implementation. He even adds a bit of history here and there to keep it interesting. This is the first book out of several I have read that is helping me hack through the tangled mental jungle of the middle game. This book is probably too basic for an any solidly ranked player, but for someone who has been wanting to take his game to a more polished plateau, I think this series of four books will help you a great deal. I've already purchased two of them, and I will be reading all four.
Yasser writes in an easy to follow style, and his use of exclamation points reveals a youthful excitement for a master. Perfect for a beginner. Diagrams are as present as they need to be, but newbies should read with a board in front of them to follow along until they can visualize the moves.
