I'm an avid reader of Historical Fiction, especially books that focus on WWII. So, I eagerly jumped at the chance to read this book.The premise was enticing but overall my feeling about the book could be summed up as 'interested by not invested'. The book is narrated by Astrid and Noa whose personalities and life experiences are quite different. Astrid was a strong main character. She's lived through a lot, she's broken and tough nut to crack. This is in complete contrast to teenage Noa who was overly naive to the point that it was grating. She never thinks things through, claims to love baby Theo yet pawns him off at every opportunity and never seems to struggle with his care even though she has no prior experience and has a new job as a trapeze artist. I just didn't connect with her on any level.This book features a group of people who are trying to escape the Nazis' wrath. This was a dangerous, turbulent time but the war seemed to be just a backdrop to the drama between the characters. Besides the moment when the babies are found in the boxcar (an emotional moment for me - which is described in the book summary), it wasn't as gritty, emotional or tension-filled as I had expected for a book set during WWII. Instead the focus was on the romantic entanglements (one of which came about too quickly to be believable) and melodrama between the characters.And yet this book continued to hold my interest enough for me to continue and find out how things end for this band of misfits. I think the premise was unique and thought the epilogue was quite interesting as Jenoff explains how she came up with the premise of her book based on historical details.The secondary characters were a unique bunch but I wish that they had been used more within the story. For example, the circus master's son was written as a potential bad guy but barely used; the older Jewish man's perspective would have been a benefit to the plot but his story wasn't explored, and the Circus Master's life, as he struggles to keep his circus afloat and help those running from the Nazis, was only hinted at. With the secondary characters' minimal lines and involvement, it was hard for readers to get to know them well enough to care about them.This book had great promise and was touted as a mixture of “The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah and "Water For Elephants" by Sara Gruen. Those are some big shoes to fill and while I think the premise was solid, I found the execution weaker than expected. It started off as a vivid, emotional Historical Fiction read but as the book progressed it became more about the relationships of Astrid and Noa giving the book a lighter Historical Romance feel that happened to be set during WWII. A good read just not as gritty as I had expected. This is a story about survival and family in various forms. With more tension and connection to the characters I would have given this book a higher rating. I just finished this book, and as I wipe away my tears I have to tell you that this is an original, riveting story about courage, love, friendship, and family. A while back, someone asked if there were too many books written about WWII, and my answer was no....there are millions of stories to tell. The Orphan's Tale is a great example of this, telling a story about events and acts of bravery that I knew nothing about. In this masterful tale, Astrid is an aerialist whose family had owned a circus in Germany; but her family was Jewish, and had disappeared when she returned home after being cast aside by her husband, a German officer. Noa is a young girl whose single act of bravery leads her to the circus, an uncommon but welcome refuge for her. This story is told with such passion and enormous heart, with pulse-pounding suspense as Astrid, Noa, and the rest of their circus friends are under constant threat of the Nazis. I highly recommend this book to all book lovers; it is sure to enthrall everyone.

I go through several books a week. As soon as I finish one, I am ready with the next. The Orphan's Tale made me stop, wait, think and want to absorb it before I went on to the next book. I'll admit I am interested in books about WWII and oddly, about historic circus life. This was a fascinating blend of the two, so I was in heaven! This is a book I wish I'd written...the writing, the plot, the characters...I didn't want it to end. Do yourself a favor and read this one.

Based on the glowing reviews, I read this novel as I am a fan of WW II historical fiction. The story managed to capture me but by no means would I call it riveting or written with deep emotion. It's all fairly tenable how the relations come about, how Noa meets Astrid, the circus being the catalyst. Other charcters (Luc, Herr Neuhoff, Gerda, Emmet) play roles that help the story and the conclusion (no spoilers) does account for the fate of all the characters. That all said, I found the writing choppy, lacking a deep felt emotion of the characters (even the main ones) and thought the second half was a bit over-romanticized. Would I recommend it? Yes. Many may find a stronger emotional connection. I did not. So 3 stars for what I thought might be a 4.5 - 5 star going in.

If you know RR, pass on this and get the updated RR.If you don’t know RR, Just get the revised RR (latest edition) with an “idiot’s Guide.”This is very easy to read, but will never serve its purpose for someone who wants or needs parliamentary procedure.Without the context, you really need RR. I purchased to refer back to earlier knowledge thinking this could act as a refresher and offer more (modern) examples. What it mostly did was alert me that my 1970+ RR would suffice.If you know RR, you’ll want folks who don’t to read something else.

Great book for nitpickers. Enough here to either grind a meeting to a halt or actually conduct a meeting in a fair manner. Be aware, includes subtle "ad's" to buy the full RRO book because this is "In Brief". (OK, I bought the full book after reading this.) This book is good enough for most occasions and organizations.

This book is readable--even enjoyable reading!! I'm stunned. I dreaded having to read it--was prepared to be bored to tears BUT I am delighted to say that the clarity of thought, and thorough explanations of why we need each rule are given in simple, clear language.We don't need to be college graduates to lead our Civic Associations and Groups--It's all here in average-citizen language. Thank you Mr. Robert. You've made it possible for any group to do good work--and remain friends!I'm gradually purchasing a copy for each Officer and Board member, having just been given presidency of an potentially dynamic force in our neighborhood.Thank you for the effort, and for using your considerable intelligence to give important information that just about anyone can understand and use--understanding of why it's needed. I can certainly see how these rules came to be in existence as have come up against issues when people tried to figure out on their own how to circumvent. These rules are not made to be broken as they help facilitate smooth and fair meetings.

This is a good reference book for those involved in any political position. I was an elected precinct committeeman and elected serve on the committee. Therefore, our meetings had to revolve around the rules as referenced in the book. This keeps the meetings going smoothly...motions, nominations, elections, votes, debates, amendments, etc. Whether it is a board meeting, committee meeting, or anything else, this is what a majority of people are using.

I've used RONR for years, but have never had my own copy. When I saw that Amazon did not have RONR, which is what I wanted, and instead had "In Brief", I thought I'd give this a try. I'm glad I did. I think this is ideal for anyone who can't stand the thought of using Robert's Rules but needs to, and it's great for those of us who have come to appreciate Robert's Rules but are by no means parliamentarians.The book is short, covering the most important or commonly used rules and scenarios. Every rule includes reference to further, complete explanations in RONR. What I like most is that it is written with the intention of being complete on its own, so it has a more succinct, direct style than RONR (where I have to admit I often wonder "What exactly are they saying here?"). I appreciate that level of clarity.That clarity also means that it's much easier to take to a meeting and help members grasp a rule, whereas RONR is too complex for that. That said, the author is adamant that "In Brief" doesn't replace or supersede RONR, and cannot be followed as the rules of an organization, but as long as we remember that, it really is a more handy guide when a person needs the basics for themselves or others.

The Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised In Brief is a great addition to help me understand and better explain Robert's Rules of Order to my group during our meetings. RONR is a thick book in itself with A LOT of information that can sometimes be difficult to understand. The In Brief edition is very easy and written in a manner that is easily understood. My group has to follow parliamentarian procedures and we often refer to RONR in order to explain what is going on during our meetings and how we should operate. I really appreciate this version.

About the Author

A member of the Society for Women Artists (SWA), international watercolourist Jean Haines is well-known for her love of her chosen medium. Having lived and travelled in many countries, this popular artist has had the opportunity to develop her skills whilst under the influence of masters from many countries, including Asia, the Middle East and Europe. She studied brush control while living in China and this had the greatest impact on her style. Later, when working with artists from India and Pakistan, she became inspired by the vibrant colours they used. The combination of East meets West in Jeans style is to be enjoyed. The magical free flow of water and colour straight on to a blank working surface (with no initial drawing) creates amazing results, often leaving her audience breathless with delight. Her paintings can be found in homes all over the world and in 2009 she won the Anthony J Lester Award during the SWA Annual Exhibition, where her work was likened to Joseph Crawhalls of the famous Glasgow Boys group of artists. She regularly writes for art magazines and exhibits in a number of galleries. Her hugely successful workshops are held regularly in the UK, and in 2014 she visited Australia for a Book Signing and Workshop Tour. In 2015 she will be visiting California, New York and St Louis in the USA to hold workshops and launch her new book 'Jean Haines' Watercolour World'. Jean lives in Crookham Village, Hampshire.

Beautiful book, but I wish I had bought it in print instead of Kindle. The format is not great on Kindle. This is one of the few Kindle books that I have purchased out of many art books, that I have had this trouble with.

Beautiful watercolors. Too much personal info, as in a autobiography, instead or techniques, how to.... etc.

I LOVE this book. It is perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to "let go" and learn how to be free with watercolor. I have MANYwatercolor books...this is my favorite.

I read the reviews saying that the eBook was formatted strangely, but underestimated just how strange. Every page except for the cover is sideways and narrowed, making the eBook unreadable-- even changing the orientation of the device doesn't help, and seems to make it worse. I uploaded two screenshots here of what the book looks like at portrait orientation and landscape for a comparison.I called customer service, who shared the screen on my Kindle and confirmed that the book isn't formatted correctly. For this price (for a download!) it should be. Customer service is alerting the publisher, who should fix it in a few business days (maybe, but if they actually cared they'd have checked the format before offering it for sale), but I accepted a refund and returned the purchase.For now, buyer beware. Rating for the publisher- zero stars. Rating for the customer service representative- all of the stars, she was great.

Jean's third book "World of Watercolor" is even more inspiring than the others. She not only shares her technique and unique perspective, she fills the reader with her infectious passion for watercolor painting. There are tips and tricks galore for the novice and the accomplished artist alike. A must have!

I love Jean Haines' work, but i bought this book as a digit download. As a download, the book is unreadable. I wish I would have bought the paperback edition. I have bought other books Jean has written in paperback, and they are excellent. I am so disappointed that this book was sold in an unreadable format when Amazon knew that the book was formatted incorrectly.

I love Ms. Haines' work, and this book takes you further into her mind as she paints various subjects. I was very happy to add this to my collection. It takes you through everything from selection of paint and tools through realizing your vision in paint. It won't make you another Jean Haines, but I'm certain it will add to any reader's repertoire of techniques.

This exquisite book has inspired me to take up watercolor again. I've always preferred impressionistic paintings to realism so I was drawn to Jean Haines' style immensely. She seems to be a lovely person who is so generous about sharing her tips. That is so helpful!! Much as I love my Kindle, I would not have even considered downloading a beautiful book like this onto it. It is important to see the gorgeous paintings in book form. I'm thinking of ordering more of her books as well as her DVD.I'm so pleased that I discovered Jean Haines!
