Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler's Guide to Unshakable Peace

Review

Teaching from Rest is a quarterly read for me because that's how often I need a shot in the arm not just for spearheading my kids' education, but for parenting. This book does just that. Sarah reminds me that I'm made to do this job of sharing the journey with my children, pointing the way as I forge my own path of learning. Her words are balm in a desert that taunts us with a need to be perfect at all times. Teaching from Rest reminds me to take care of myself so that I can pour out that needed passion from true, inward authenticity. --Tsh Oxenreider, author of Notes from a Blue Bike: The Art of Living Intentionally in a Chaotic World and founder of theArtofSimple.netReading Teaching from Rest was truly transformational to our entire homeschool year! I'd been feeling weary and burnt out as a homeschool mom and Sarah's words breathed life into my tired bones and fresh inspiration into our days. The benefits and blessings we've reaped in our home since implementing Morning Time have been amazing. It's so wonderful to be starting the homeschool day with anticipation instead of dread and to have my kids eager to learn and begging for more. Thank you, thank you, Sarah! We are eternally grateful to you! --Crystal Paine, New York Times bestselling author of Say Goodbye to Survival Mode, founder of moneysavingmom.comIn Teaching from Rest, Sarah beautifully reminds us that we will never be able to give our children the perfect education. Instead of crumbling under the weight of our attempts to do so, we can let the burdens fall off our tired backs. --Jamie Martin, simplehomeschool.net, author of Give Your Child the World

First of all, this is a good book. A very good book. I read it three times in a row to let its wisdom sink in. It gives an excellent reorientation toward a God-dependent commitment to the souls of our children, the reason that most of us are homeschooling in the first place. And it's not just philosophical; it's also practical. Sarah Mackenzie gives good suggestions for pursuing a restful home education setting, rather than a frenzied, academic-success driven one. But, I found myself wondering, how will this model look in the high school years? The author herself hasn't yet plunged into the waters of homeschooling high schoolers, waters that often feel very icy with uncertain post-secondary plans, SATs, dual credit options, and college applications circling us like sharks! She encourages parents not to worry if we don't finish the math book this year as long as we've focused on the deeper things of goodness, truth, and beauty, and I love her advice. For those of us with teenagers, however, who will soon need to enter or reenter the world of textbooks, standardized evaluations, and transcripts, our kids just need to finish the math book this year or they can't move on to the next level of math. Whether they see the beauty in Algebra 2 or are inspired by it is very easily shuffled off to the side in the necessity of passing the CLEP test so we can get a jump on college credits and possibly afford a college education. I'd love to see a Teaching High School from Rest after the author has the homeschooling of a few teens under her belt!

Each of my three years of homeschooling (so far) I have reached February-March and began to question everything I'm doing. Maybe I need a new curriculum. Maybe I need to commit to a new method. Maybe I need to overhaul our daily routine and really buckle down. Do I even know what I'm doing? Am I doing any of this right? Maybe I should have left this up to the experts. Thankfully this year a fellow HS mom recommended this book to me and it was exactly what I needed to read. My anxiety has settled immensely in the past 24 hours since I picked it up. I felt like I highlighted 3/4 of the book because so much of it spoke right to me and the struggles I've been having. If you've ever found yourself overwhelmed by whether or not use homeschooling "good enough," I highly recommend this book to help you step back, take some deep breaths and calm your anxious mind and heart. It's well-written, quick to read, and full of truth and excellent advice. I'll probably read it many more times throughout my homeschooling journey!

Can I give this 6 stars? Because I would in a heartbeat. This book reassured my heart and brought rest to my mind. It addressed every doubt I had and even ones I didn't know I had! It should truly be required reading for any homeschooling mom. I read it every August, but I find myself revisiting the book throughout the school year for reassurance. The idea of teaching from a restful state changes how I homeschool and even how I parent. I wish there were a Parenting from Rest version of this book because the principle can benefit anyone who has children, not just homeschooling moms. Love it!

I want to recommend this delightful book to all homeschooling parents, especially mamas. Written in a clear, encouraging way, the author relates how she has modified her homeschool teaching style to a lifestyle that honors God, her abilities and responsibilities, and creates less tension and stress at home. Who doesn't need to hear those things?I plan to gift copies of this book to my new to homeschool mama friends. The author writes from a classical Christian homeschool perspective.I hope the information I have presented helps you to make an informed decision! If so, please vote by replying Yes to "Was this review helpful." Thank you!

I stumbled upon this book while searching Amazon for encouragement to continue my homeschooling journey. I had cast a broad net searching for anything homeschool related that might be that life ring I could grap hold of, and be pulled from the depths of the murky, churning, discouraging world I was in. I have a high-schooler that does his work well, without complaint, mostly independently. I have an elementary student who does her work well, loves a challenge and also works well, mostly without complaint. Then I have my middle-schooler. This one, whom I dearly love, is the reason I purchased this book. Our days with one another were far from restful. The days were cyclical. They started with positive encouragement to do his work that turned into nagging and threatening to do it or else. After reading this book I realized that for this child I was asking too much. Every child is different, I know. But this book gave me permission to "lighten the load" for my beloved son without compromising his education. In fact, lightening his load actually HELPED him to do his work so much for efficiently and with excellence. I was able to guide him in the assigned work without damaging his spirit, (which is something that took a beating almost every day) and it allowed him to see that he CAN do his work - well, and within a timely manner. He has finally seen in himself what I have been trying to show him - that he is capable!!I love the many other ideas that Sarah talks about in this book, but for the the chapter on lightening the load was life saving. I found this book towards the first part of our homeschooling year. It was so freeing to live out the remainder of our year in peace. I've since found Sarah's website, Amongst Lovely Things, and her Read-Aloud Revival membership site. I don't usually jump on bandwagons, but I'm happy to hop aboard this one.

Oh sweet mama! Is your joy for schooling your precious children slipping away? You know deep in your heart that you are called to homeschool, but it's seems to be such a struggle. Read this book, cover to cover. Enjoy it slowly like a piece of chocolate. Discover teach from not a place of physical rest, for of rest in Christ, who called you for such a purpose as teaching your children.

Before you buy this classic Landmark edition, please consider the newer, Cambridge translation by Jeremy Mynott. As someone who read both editions (don’t ask), I much prefer the Cambridge version. It was translated and released in 2013, while the Landmark edition was translated in 1874. Landmark’s Victorian English is dense and difficult, while Cambridge uses simpler language and – most importantly – more sentence breaks. The extra periods help prevent your eyes from glazing over as your brain tries to remember what was going on five lines ago in the same sentence. (If you want more details on the differences between the Landmark and Cambridge editions, see my review of the Thucydides: The War of the Peloponnesians and the Athenians (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought).)I’m sure I would have given up on Thucydides had I been restricted to the Landmark edition, thus depriving me of a great adventure in politics, psychology, history, and war. Reading Thucydides really did change my life, and I encourage you to follow my footsteps down the easier path.

"The Landmark Thucydides" is the first book in Robert Strassler's excellent series of annotated translations of ancient history. As of the writing of this review, the series also has Herodotus, Arrian, and Xenophon's "Hellenika". What makes these editions so different are the various additions that make the text easier to understand. There are maps every few pages, summaries of each section, timelines of the years of the history, and notes to explain difficult to interpret passages."The Peloponnesian War" needs these extras more than most. Thucydides jumps around in his narrative and uses place names that are unfamiliar to even learned classicists. The book ends with some short essays on relevant topics, such as Spartan institutions and trireme warfare. Thucydides is an altogether difficult author, but this edition makes him easily accessible without dumbing him down. Several prominent Greek historians have contributed to this series, which shows it is not only for students, but also for more serious readers. I recommend this edition of Thucydides above all others.

Seriously, I read this book and it feels like I'm reading about WWII or some other world-changing event. Thucydides was an Athenian general and writes in a militant, matter-of-fact way. Since he doesn't flourish anything, the events he describes seem human, even if a little cold. The Peloponnesian War was the peak of Classical Greece. The Athenian Empire dominated the Aegean Sea and the Peloponnesian League balanced it out, not always peacefully. The war between the two lasted 30 years and exposed the Greeks to a level of violence and misery they never even imagined. I can't even get into it since it would seem fake and just bleh. You have to read it from Thucydides himself, who knew the Greek leaders, fought in the war, and recorded it all without any pretensions. Everyone should read this book just to see what it means to go to war.

This is an amazing book however the Kindle edition is severely lacking. I am reading it on my Kindle Fire. The maps are included but unreadable in their present form. Zooming in to the maps only creates very blurry images. The Kindle edition includes the paragraph numbers and summaries (a good feature) however, their location alternates between being located after the paragraph to before the paragraph. The foot notes are included at the end of each book/chapter however there is no link or numbering to connect them back to the writing. Most of the footnotes refer to the maps, which can't really be read anyways, however there is some additional information included in those notes that would be helpful for the reader to access. I own this book in the print edition (along with the other books in this "Landmark" series). It is an awesome book and worthy of 5 Stars but the Kindle edition really needs to be improved before I can rate it above a 3.

If your primary interest is in learning the history of the Peloponnesian War, I would recommend Donald Kagan's masterful book on the subject. Kagan dedicated his career to the study of the war and his book is a modern masterpiece. I had the good fortune to read Kagan before reading the "The Landmark Thucydides." It made the whole experience much more enjoyable. I understood what was going on and did not have to spend so much time with the Landmark footnotes. If you want to take the big leap and take on Thucydides, the Landmark Edition is a must. While not as strong as Kagan, the introduction and scholar essays are first class and go a long way to making Thucydides approachable to the modern reader. However, what takes The Landmark Edition to another level is the footnotes and maps. If you have the patience and take the time to really study the text, you can really develop a deep understanding of Thucydides. Finally, Robert Strassler is a real hero. Let us hope that he is able to produce more Landmark Editions. In my book, Strassler has covered himself with glory and has done the reading public a great service. Highly recommended!

I've never been one to watch plays, let alone read them. I was a kid who grew up entertained by the boob-tube and video games. In my youthful mind, I couldn't have told you which was the harsher punishment - being forced to sit through a "boring old" play or a spanking.Nope, the tragedies in my life weren't Greek; they were running out of grape popsicles or not having a videotape nearby to record a new episode of the Transformers cartoon. With age comes wisdom and patience (so it's said), and I've come to appreciate good stories, no matter the medium. In the quest to broaden my horizons of Western literature, the next thing on my plate was the only surviving set of plays by Aeschylus. As Wikipedia will inform you, Aeschylus is the first Greek tragedian whose works are still intact. It's estimated he wrote up to ninety plays, but we're only left with seven. Four of them are parts of incomplete series', and the other three form a trilogy known as The Oresteia. That one's next on the TBR pile, but here's my take on the first four:** Prometheus Bound - My second favorite of the four, it tells the story of the Titan Prometheus, bound to a mountain by Zeus. His crime? Caring for the human race while Zeus wanted to destroy them and start over. Prometheus gave man the gifts of intellect and science, the most notable being fire. This little play packs a wallop of metaphor and sarcasm. I loved it.** The Suppliants - Ties into the unhappy story of Io from Prometheus Bound. Her descendants, great-great-great-great-great-etc grandchildren of Zeus, have run off from Egypt to seek asylum in Argos, land of their ancestors. The women are escaping forced marriage to their cousins in Egypt. Interesting, but probably my least favorite. Maybe it got better in the missing parts of the play.** Seven Against Thebes - My favorite in the group. The city of Thebes is under siege by seven Argive armies, led by the exiled brother of Eteocles, king of Thebes. I loved the way the heroes and villains were described in this play. Such great imagery.** The Persians - The first interesting thing about this play is it's based on the real battle of Salamis, where Greeks fought back the Persian army led by Xerxes. Aeschylus was a soldier at the time, and while this account is obviously fictional, his experience gives the play another dimension. The second interesting thing? It's told from the perspective of the Persians while they await news from the battle, only to discover their efforts were for naught. The ghost of King Darius, Xerxes' dead father, chastises the arrogance of the Persian empire. If you find Homer's epic poems are a little too intimidating, give Aeschylus a shot. His are short, but wonderful works giving insight to the world of Greek lore and culture. My only hope is that someday, the rest of his plays will be found in a cave somewhere.

It's hard to give an overall review on this, as it's a collection of plays from antiquity where most of the surrounding context is lost. Aeschylus' plays were usually in trilogies and with only one part of a trilogy intact, it makes it hard to appreciate certain aspects of these plays. You can tell that Aeschylus tried to push the envelope, and come up with new technique for what was a relatively new medium at the time. From reading the introduction by the translator Philip Velacott, I get the strong sense that these are just glimpses into what were very moving trilogies.Prometheus Bound is an introduction to a trilogy of plays featuring the titular Prometheus first being chained to a rock, then explaining to various passersby his story. The initial violence of the opening scene is jarring, but the majority of the play itself is very subdued, with Prometheus telling of his crimes against Zeus but that he has no regrets of bringing humanity it's greatest gift and bears his punishment gladly. This sacrifice is a pretty common thread across Western myths, but it shines very powerfully here. The Supplicants basically sets the stage for a deeper, more moving trilogy where the bulk of the story is lost. Because of this, the play suffers drastically, as it just provides the context for something with a lot more action. I feel like this was very uninteresting and plodded along too slowly to be very memorable - but then again, it's just a teaser for the murderous undertaking to follow.Seven Against Thebes was the real standout gem for me. Since it's the last part and apex of a trilogy rife with murder and struggle, it doesn't really hold back. In this story the citadel of Cadmea is under attack by seven bloodthirsty warriors. It's up the heroic defenders to stave them off. Although all the action happens off-stage, things end in a bloody mess, with the two sons of Oedipus killing each other. As with most Greek plays the inclusion of the chorus bogs down a lot of the action, but you can tell that Aeschylus is really trying out new techniques here, with the chorus actually interacting with the characters more than the other plays. I really liked the descriptions of the attackers and quick follow up of the defenders, I'd love seeing this play on stage. As for The Persians, not much of note actually happens. It's basically a retelling of the loss of the battle of Salamis being relayed to the Persians back home. It's interesting enough, and clearly meant as more of a comedy which points out the hubris in Xerxes' battle strategies, but I feel like this was the weakest of the bunch and lost interest quickly. As a play, I'm sure it was very entertaining with the funny costumes and constantly poking fun at the Persians, but it's a bit flat and dry to just read through here. One quick note - Velacott's translation really feels fresh and interesting, and his introductions and various comments throughout really help build a pretty deep understanding of the context and untranslatable humor behind the scenes. As is usually the case with ancient works, the translation is very key to the appreciation of the style, and here the wit of the original shines through.

I agree with Aristophanes - Aeschylus (and Sophocles)is ( are) better than Euripides (See The Frogs). This collection filled in some gaps in my understanding of the Greek myths/plays. The introduction was very helpful. Prometheus Bound stands alone. Good play. The Suppliants highlighted interesting concepts and connections with Egypt. It built on things Egyptian mentioned in Herodotus's magnum opus (pardon the Latin) Histories. Seven against Thebes closed out the ill-fated house at the grandchild level but was not an interesting story itself..

I've always been a fan of Greek literature, and Prometheus Bound and Other Plays doesn't disappoint me. It is a demonstration of Greek beliefs; the portrayal of a wise god doomed for his intentions to help humanity, the Danaids and their quest to find freedom from their cousins, a conflict between brothers announced by their father, and the failed Persian expedition in Greece. Aeschylus uses his plays almost as if they were fables, leading to reflection, although more complex and harder to interpret. These plays, like many others of Classical Greece, are examples of the birth of theater as a form of expression; a new way to criticize, opine, protest, etc. Theater is one of the great gifts we have inherited from the Ancient Greeks, and with this book we are exposed to that gift.

Aeschylus is the first of the great writers of ancient tragedy in Athens. These are good translations.

A decent read. Prometheus Bound is one of the classics of Western Literature - and Vellacott's commentaries are pretty helpful in understanding the history and banckground of the plays, the life of Aeschylus, and pretty good translator notes. If Greek plays are your cup of tea, this book is a decent and economical choice.

Great!
