I needed it, though I did not know that. It's also a book about the misery of inheriting a vast sum of money, /not/ a book I needed, particularly, though I was so hooked I went right along with it.Of all the books I've read that consist of a single, unbroken, paragraph -- Garcia Marquez, Beckett, Saramago -- this was my far the most effortless, the most compulsively readable. My bitterness, I discovered, was downright ecstatic to have some company. It warms like a bonfire, piling on obsessions, repetitions, and brilliance, and some of perhaps the best sentences I've ever read: "A person can be ruined for life in Chur, even if he only spends one night there."This must be a good place to start reading Thomas Bernhard, since I'd never read any of his novels before this one (I'd read only stories of "The Voice Imitator") and now I am determined to read everything. It is an oddly addictive voice; a week later I am still cross I don't have more Bernhard to read.In the midst of investigating misery, ways of surviving it are found and lost, then found and lost again. Art, for one, though it is found to be a most uncertain raft.

I loved the idea of this book (I’m a classical musician myself) but had to put it down halfway through, which is something I almost never do. It read like one long run-on paragraph that never got to the point. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen, but nothing ever did. Maybe that was the point? Maybe some people enjoy this style of neurotic stagnation? I honestly cannot believe I am putting a book down and not finishing it. I just couldn’t. Too many other books on my to-be-read shelf.

Loved it. A sad and bitter trip to Austria, the narrator’s memories of Glenn Gould and the different ways his contemporaries reacted to his genius were both funny and scathing. A really interesting read, excellent writing.

Here, you have a story told in complete narration inside the primary character's head. This story takes you through the landscape of Austria , completely inside the mind of one person. It is a fascinating story and means to story telling. A definite read for anyone who enjoys something a little outside the ordinary.

Hysterical and affirmative. So much self loathing it's curves in on itself. Great writing about a sad guy and a suicidal guy and how they cope by trying to figure out what the social sciences are. No the human sciences I meant. A true loser. Blame Glenn Guilds genius. He is a madman like Artaud.

This classic is worth reading as period piece, but it certainly is depressing. Written soon after WW2, it presents a bleak view of humanity. It reminded me of Kafka, but without without the spark of hope that his protagonists have.

Very gritty and mind blowing when it comes to trying to achieve perfection at its most supreme level.

About the Author

Shantideva was a scholar in the eighth century from the monastic university Nalanda, one of the most celebrated centers of learning in ancient India. According to legend, Shantideva was greatly inspired by the celestial bodhisattva Manjushri, from whom he secretly received teachings and great insights. Yet as far as the other monks could tell, there was nothing special about Shantideva. In fact, he seemed to do nothing but eat and sleep. In an attempt to embarrass him, the monks forced Shantideva's hand by convincing him to publicly expound on the scriptures. To the amazement of all in attendance that day, Shantideva delivered the original and moving verses of the Bodhicharyavatara. When he reached verse thirty-four of the ninth chapter, he began to rise into the sky, until he at last disappeared. Following this, Shantideva became a great teacher.

Shantideva is a man who appears to have acquired alien like intelligence when it comes to living a selfless life. Consider this quote from his chapter on patience: "That the Buddha's heart might rejoice, henceforth I shall be the master of myself, the servant of the world. I shall not seek revenge though the crowds stomp on my head or kill me. Let the guardians of the world rejoice." I am pretty confident I will never meet someone this ethically committed to being patient--wish I had a time machine to talk with Shantideva for a day and ask him where exactly his insights came from (each verse in that book reads like a profound insight). Perhaps all his thoughts just assembled in his mind as he delivered his famous discourse to a crowd who was skeptical of his moral integrity at Nalanda. They thought he just walked around the university not caring about anything but rest and food. There are so many poetic, inspiring and beautiful verses throughout this book--however, I discourage you to take every verse literally unless you really don't mind being trampled or killed by crowds without seeking revenge. Nevertheless, a ton can be learned from this book just by leaning in the direction of the ethical path he has written. Consider another favorite verse I have from him: "There is nothing that does not grow light through habit and familiarity. Working with small trials, I train myself to handle great adversity."

We are using this book and Pema Chodron's book 'No Time to Lose' in preparation to taking the Bodhisattva vows this spring with Mindfulness Meditation Centers. I am very grateful to have Pema's book to help with the understanding of Shantideva's prose. If you only want to purchase one book...purchase Pema's book. All of the prose verses are in her book also. As always, she points the way when there is confusion. Shantideva was a genius in his own right as well as being a true Bodhisattva.

If you decide to study Shantideva's Bodhicharyavatara, you soon discover that there are a number of translations from which to choose. And you will probably find that you need to own more than one of them because there continues to be a good deal of discussion about which of the various versions of the text is closest to the original. I like this version as much as Alan Wallace's heavily annotated translation and I think both are essential if you are studying the text with a commentary.If I had to choose, I would take this version because it was translated (a) in parallel with Kunzang Pelden's beautiful commentary on the text, (b) the translation was done within the context of a traditional teacher-student relationship, and (c) the introduction gives a great overview of the translation history and textual challenges of the text.There a number of good commentaries on the text but in the Nyingma tradition, the one to read is definitely The Nectar of Manjushri's Speech by Kunzang Pelden.

Beautiful -- an explanation of the way of the peaceful warrior. Readers might like to know that Shambhala publications has also posted a 5 session (free) video course about this book on Vimeo, with the primary translator as lecturer. Somehow I accidentally found this, and what a treasure. We really are incredibly lucky to have these materials available to us. A heartfelt thanks to those who worked so hard on this translation.

This text is one of the great classics in Buddhist literature. The scripture literally shines like the mid-day Sun.The Dalai Lama provides an introduction. His explanation is as enlightening as the main text.Incomparable!

I read the quote from the Dalai Lama on the cover of this book and thought it just had to be incredible for him to say what he did (basically that everything he knows about the way of a boddhisatva came from this text). I can truly see why he said that now - the book is awe inspiring, and I don't say that lightly.There are passages that read as if someone living in 2013 America was writing them, they are that pertinent and powerful. Take into account that it was written around 1300 years ago, and that - that is amazing. The depth of meaning, the applicability and wisdom of the stanzas within this gem are simply beautiful. If you want to read something as deep as it is practical, as meaningful as it is beautiful, you need to read this book

Excellent read! The translators of Shantideva's text give the reader a history of this text and discuss both the challenges and reasoning for the way they have created this translation into English. Also, there are commentaries on the text in the chapters following the text. This a very thorough and thoughtful look into Shantideva's "The Way of the Bodhisattva". I am enjoying it immensely and highly recommend it.

If one is unfamiliar with Buddhism, this is a great book to start with. This revised edition contains updated language for the modern reader and sets forth the 'nuts and bolts' of one of the key elements of Buddhist practice - Bodhichitta. The 'what' and 'why' of cultivating this, then how one can nurture and sustain this in one's everyday life and relationships is well elaborated in clear language. The book gives relevant examples for context and practical steps, so that one can go beyond mere philosophical abstraction. If one is already familiar with Buddhism, the read is very suitable for ongoing introspection, mindfulness and nurturing wisdom at increasing levels of depth.

I just started drawing 3 mo. Ago with you can draw in 30 days and it’s so true. After that I tried other books and found none to be as good as Mark kistlers book, so I bought 4 other of his book as well including this one and can now do most anything . I am 57 and never could draw anything! Now I want to draw everyday even if only have time to doodle an idea for later.

I feel like Mark was all time next to me while I was reading this book. Some lessons seems to be way complicated and I even were thinking to give 4 stars but when I managed to draw ballet slipper with more details than suggested Mark, I understood that he did his job.I would like readers and publisher pay attention that: some instructional pictures are wrong (missing) during lessons: penguin, frog head and clipart hand (nothing critical but...).Very often, the first blue print and following drawings are way different. For example: while drawing clipart hand, instruction told me to place pinky at certain place in blueprint. When I finished my hand was looking strange. I compared my final result with Mark's and discovered that he moved pinky way down on 3 or 4th step (but said nothing about that).BTW in the lesson about cake there are two sources of light not one as mentioned in book. I used technic which invited guest artist taught us while drawing boot. The first light is from front left while second - behind right. That explains why we have two shadows, one opposite to another.Some measuring hints are useless because they are told relative to some part of picture, which size is not mentioned at all. The rest measuring hints (including pencil) in this will teach you how to make your picture proportional.I found only few hacks practical: ruler, stumpy from napcin and couple of more (IMHO using your fingers to draw oval seems to be correct only for kids but not adults). BTW those big gray boxes 'please read those two pages, no drawing yet' was annoying and I wish in Kindle version it can be replaced with just single headline.Despite the fact I had original Kindle book, I found scanned PDF version more easy to follow on my iPad. The pages in PDF version are more easy to read and follow. In Kindle version I had to scroll back (3-7 clicks) to see the original picture (to compare it to instructions) while in PDF version I could scroll with single swap.In general, another book 'you can draw in 30 days' is better for start. This one is more to adding additional skills to your drawing (however can be used as first book as well). Currently I am going to subscribe for one year video lessons.All my friends cannot ever imagine I could draw so realistic hands, noses, eyes (the lips are still the most difficult body part for me, however after this book I can draw them more realistically).Thank you Mark for great job.

This book is a huge disappointment. Instead of having sketchers use a ruler to measure proportions, Kistler suggests using 'hacks' such as fingers or coins. The results are ridiculously off what the final sketch should look like. Very frustrating.Kistler's other book, You Can Draw in 30 Days, was wonderful and I learned a lot. Spend your money on that one.

I’m a little biased because I’ve taught with the author at a kids’ art camp but if you want to have the best possible shot at understanding the drawing tricks and techniques needed to fool the eye, Mark Kistler is a good as they come. I’ve painted for over 30 years but I learned more in my first week of sitting in on his classes at camp than I’d learned combined up to that point. He takes all the info that the great art masters figured out centuries ago and puts them into a dozen principles that are easy to follow and ridiculously easy to master! When you “get” the theory, the actual drawing is a breeze! You can’t IMAGINE the magic you have inside you already. TRY IT!

This book is AWESOME!!!!! I am not an artist and struggle even following along. BUT...This book is amazing. I love it. I cannot wait for Saturday so I can go outside and enjoy my new book. This is a book for the absolute beginner or anyone in-between. The diagrams make you look at objects differently. I can see down the line being able to look at something and actually draw it. Thank you. Mark!!!

I went through this book (in a little more than 30 days), and I'm shocked how much I learned and improved! I was one of those people that said I can't draw anything, even a straight line! I honestly believed that drawing was a talent, not a skill. I'm so glad I got this book on a whim - I'm drawing every day and loving it! Obviously I still have a LONG way to go, but I'm so surprised I've even started down this path.If you have any desire to learn to draw, this is the perfect book to start with!

Watched Mark Kistler on PBS in the late 80s or was it early 90s. Fabulous to understand that anyone can learn to draw. It just takes someone like Kistler to guide you to actually 'seeing' what you are looking at so you can copy it.

My review is only subjective. I have enjoyed seven of Mark Kistler's books but I could not relate to this one. I simply didn't care for the method of drawing.
