I find the book very informative and useful and I feel cheated onI sadly bought the Kindle version and I feel ripped off, First I pay 4 dollars more for the Kindle version even if that meant me not getting the CD or other side products. I could live with that, at least I got the book right....But no, the examples in this book are useless as it is not possible to zoom the images with Kindle and most formuals that Spreadsheet goes over are based on those images.I had before bought the book "Excel The missing Manual" and that was great on Kindle and it was even cheaper for Kindle,but adding 4 dollars for Kindle version without any side products and horrible quality is a rip off, and Mr. Spreadseet and Amazon should really do something to fix this. Its amazing disrespect to customers. I cant see my self buy a book by Mr. Spreadsheet again or even Amazon just because of this incident, I'll stick to other authors that at least have the decency to not publish books for Kindle version if they cant provide the same quality as the book. It is incredibly frustrating and i feel so ripped off, you can not see this flaw in the preview so I feel cheated on.Sad as the book is so good.

While everyone's starting to learn cooler hipper languages, the reality is that VBA in excel is still pretty darn useful.If you have absolutely no experience then VBA for dummies is still - to me - one of the better places to start. The book is not as big and intimidating. However, after you've already written a few programs, this book is fantastic. Great step by step instructions. Lots of examples. Advanced sections are great. It will take me some time before this all becomes old hat for me.If you were looking for something that uses VBA to link to other Microsoft applications. You should be good with this book. It goes into detail on how to interface with outlook, deal with sending emails, interface with Word or PowerPoint.If you need to learn how to interface with databases, this is not the best choice. But there is no reason to believe it would be in the title or table of contents, so you really can't complain.Will it replace the all mighty google. No, but as a supplement, it is excellent and a bit more structured. The explanations are far better than what you'd find on-line. There are tons of random helpful tips and history that - if you're nerdy enough to read the whole book rather than just use the table of contents and index to get to the sections you need - are pretty darn wonderful.Oh, and for people who can't stand the upgrades in the new version of Excel, the author explains that stuff too. One reason to get the newer vs the older version.

I purchased this book to learn more about Excel's VBA while in between semesters. The book comes with a CD with all the files that makes it easy to follow along step by step. It is written in an easy to understand manner. Chapter 1 of the book contains a detailed history of Excel and how it came about which I found to be very interesting. The book even includes a neat 'creating an international application' section that teachers readers how to incorporate various languages when building an application. At first glance the book can seem overwhelming and complicated but after going through select chapters you realize it's not too bad at all and actually quite fun to go through. I learned a great deal of how this great, powerful Office application evolved from its early days. Outside of that this book has everything one needs to increase his/her knowledge base in Excel programming. I followed a long quite a few select chapters and learned a range of things from using VBA to build applications, to troubleshooting code errors, to creating function procedures, to building events. I have been able to implement what i learned in this book into my day to day Excel duties at work. The only drawback to this book is the that it is not in color but I don't have a hard time seeing any of the text of pictures. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to program with VBA.

This is as much an enthusiastic endorsement of the author as it is a review of this book in particular. I've used probably four or five of Walkenbach's books over the years and they've all been very well done. They contain all the information the Excel user needs, he does a great job of anticipating the readers' questions, and he includes enough humorous observations to make what might otherwise be a boring exercise quite enjoyable. These favorable impressions are all based on using his other titles purely as reference works; i.e., I have a question about an Excel related topic, I look it up and read only what I need to close the book and go back to work.This title, however, is different. I am not a trained programmer, and I don't know enough to "pick a programming topic" and then read only what applies to my question. Thus, I have begun reading on page 1 and will read through to the end, certain that he'll have covered what I need to know. I'm about 20% of the way in so far and am amazed by what I've learned already. I'm even MORE impressed with his ability to communicate to someone like me, with a broad Excel background, but virtually no programming skills. With every page, my confidence grows that I'll soon be enjoying greater productivity, and accolades from co-workers who depend on me to get the most out of the tools they use.When it comes to Excel, John Walkenbach TOTALLY ROCKS... however, I have no idea about whether his banjo playing measures up.

Besides giving some detailed descriptions of combat on the both the Syrian and Egyptian fronts, the author gives us a "big picture" description of the war from the days preceding the war when Israeli intelligence utterly failed to protect the nation to the geo-political maneuvering to bring the war to an end. Besides the description of combat, the book looks at the military planning and execution from a high level: the generals. We also see Moshe Dyan and Golda Meir in action. This is book is more than a good read about an important conflict, it is a catalog of success and failure at the leadership level. I also recommend The Heights of Courage: A Tank Leader's War On the Golan by Avigdor Kahalani to see combat at the tank battalion level and Duel for the Golan: The 100-Hour Battle That Saved Israel by Jerry Asher to hear more detail about tank combat in the Golan. I think the book by Abraham Rabinovich is an important book to understand the important role of leadership in war.

This is my 2nd time reading this epic and dramatic and authoritative account of the 73 war. I read the original and had to read the revised addition. I took my time reading this book as there was so much to understand and process. The first 100 pages alone should be required reading for intelligence annalists on what not to do. Not only did the author explain the set up for the war he took us into the tanks, forts and battle HQs and in the capitals. Many reviews have already have been written and I will just echo this I feel is the finest book on the 73 war. I look forward to using his notes for further reading and viewing for years to come. Buy it. I just received his Jerusalem book and will be digging in soon.

This is a very long book that reads like a thriller for one of the most unpredictable and tense war of the 20th century.The author had access to an incredible amount of documents and direct participants in the conflict. The book relates from many different levels and perspectives, describing the events almost as they unfold at a strategic level to the tactical events without ever forgetting the human aspect. You are there following political leaders in their doubts and understandings down to the individual soldiers and actual men fighting for reasons bigger than them.There are a tremendous amount of facts that can be learned about this conflict in the book. What was Sadat end game, was Sharon the savior of the day? How luck tip the events in one direction or the others, what we're everybody's option, did America won the war for Israel? What balance could be achieved to eventually lead to a peace agreement? Which part in this deadly game everyone played?Not to mention countless lesser known commando operation or intelligence activities.This book is fascinating and once started, one cannot let it down. Recommended.

I read this one first to get a better history of Israel. I followed this one with "The Six Day War" by Michael Oren. The two together make for a cohesive history of happenings. I was very young at the time of these two wars and so didn't have any sense of what happened or what it meant for the Middle East. These 2 books helped put things in context.I would recommend both books read in "order" - this one followed by "The Six Day War".There are many tomes about Israel, Palestine, the Middle East and how today's troubles came to exist. There are historical books, religious books and editorial style books. I would suggest reading books from all sides , educate yourself and then make your own conclusions.I found these two books to be an excellent start. Highly recommend it.

Out of three books I read about the Arab-Israeli conflict, this one was my favorite (1948 and Six Days of Ware were the other two).I digested The Yom Kippur War - The Epic Encounter That Transformed The Middle East by Abraham Rabinovich (Shocken Books, New York 2004). This is primarily a "war book" - focusing on military strategy - yet includes the essential human and geo-political insights that served to shape the historical context, and the outcome.Of all three, I believe I enjoyed The Yom Kippur War by Abraham Rabinovich the most...populated with the names of Golda Meir, Dayan, Sharon, Begin, Kissinger, et al. Yet, the demonstration of courage in the face of certain death by so many - was - for me - shocking (for lack of a more poignant term).Bottom Line for me after completing this study (it will take me several decades to "digest" the meanings that will continue to resonate through me):

I wanted to learn more about the major battles of this conflict. I have heard of computer programmers trying to recreate this battles but the outcome is bad for Israel. There is something about the fighting spirit of the Israeli that can't be modeled. This book has an incredible amount of detail but presented to the reader in an easy to understand way. I knew the outcome but found myself wondering what was going to happen at the end. It had me on the edge of my seat and I lost track of time a few times. It covers the who, what, when, why, and where in amazing clarity. With that being said my one and only complaint was a lack of battle maps that would help a reader who was not familiar with the geography of the area. It wouldn't have to be fancy maps and even a sketch would help. I bought the Kindle version and plan to order a hard copy next month for my library.

Rather than clumsily assembling chapters by region or ingredients, Kian Lam Kho stealthy introduces concise recipes through technique: Explosion in the Wok, Dipping in Oil, Flavoring with Sauces, The Virtues of Slow Cooking, etc. WWJD? He would gift this book instead of calling for delivery.The pictures are generous and beautiful, but my one feedback is that each recipe should be accompanied by a picture. PCJT will be a timeless addition to your library.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book from the publisher for a review. I was not required to write a positive review and I only review and rate products that I personally have reviewed.

Every cookbook organizes recipes based on different criteria. This cookbook is unique because it uses “cooking style” as the organizing criteria.I can see how this layout would benefit an experienced cook trying to improve his/her skills using very specific cooking method, such as Flash-Frying or Dry-Frying. To me, it’s not optimal because I would rather sort through recipes by geographic region or type of food.Nonetheless, this book deserves a 5-stars because of the excellent content.Please note: This is NOT American-Chinese cuisine. I found some recipes such as Kung Pao Chicken, General Tso, and Stir-Fry Beef, which should be palatable for most people. However, this is an authentic Chinese cookbook, including recipes for Rabbit, Squab, Carp, Eel, Beef Tripe, Pig Stomach, Pork Liver and Kidney, Pig Feet, Squid, etc. Most of these recipes I would never make for myself, but it’s a nice resource to have.If you purchase this cookbook looking for American-Chinese cuisine, you may be disappointed.

This is probably the most comprehensive introduction to Chinese cooking. The author puts special emphasis on ingredients, equipment, and technique. He wants you to understand the "how" and "why" behind everything, which makes him a wonderful teacher. The photography is also to die for, and it's obvious from the recipes and photos that the author is a real master of Chinese cooking.The types of recipes in this cookbook are for the types of dishes that you might find in a fine Chinese restaurant. Many of them are something quite special and better than the typical versions that one might eat at any small restaurant in China. For those who just want to learn simple dishes for home cooking, I recommend "The Cultural Revolution Cookbook." Each book has its domain and does its thing perfectly.Finally, Kian Lam Kho's enthusiasm and passion for cooking really shine through in this book. The author genuinely cares about teaching you in the very best possible way, and teaching you everything you would need to know about the techniques and reasons behind everything. It's really an unbeatable comprehensive introduction to Chinese cooking.

Some people may be off-put by the fact that there is a LOT of exposition as to the history of Chinese cuisine, regional differences, etc. but I love that stuff. The recipes are also rocking: I have a dedicated Fire in the kitchen that I use to pull up recipes, and this book is a go-to.

I didn't buy this book as a cookbook, but more of an encyclopaedia and general guide. That's exactly what I got. I will certainly try some of the recipes, but more importantly, the author gives tips on techniques, tools and ingredients, which make Chinese cuisine much more approachable. Also of note, the recipes and styles are broken down into regions, which further demystifies to huge geographic mass which is "Chinese cuisine", and also offers insights into how and when the various styles made their way to America. A great reference work. Which is exactly what I wanted.

This book is amazing. There's so much detail about the equipment, the cutting techniques, and the various forms of cooking across the great spectrum of Chinese cuisine. The recipes I've used have been great. I appreciate that variety meats are included, even if I'm not yet brave enough to cook them at home! The author really provides enough information to make you comfortable with cooking techniques very different from what most Americans are used to. Definitely a keeper and one I'll recommend to friends.

About the Author

Publius Vergilius Maro (70-19 B.C.), known as Virgil, was born near Mantua in the last days of the Roman Republic. In his comparatively short life he became the supreme poet of his age, whose Aeneid gave the Romans a great national epic equal to the Greeks’, celebrating their city’s origins and the creation of their empire. Virgil is also credited  with authoring two other major works of Latin literature, the Eclogues and the Georgics. Kimberly Johnson is a poet and a scholar of Renaissance literature. Her poems, essays and translations have appeared in numerous publications, including The New Yorker. Cy Twombly is a well-known American artist, whose paintings are both graffiti-like and beautifully subtle. He lives in Lexington, Virginia, and Italy.

The Georgics are not to everyone's taste, but it is an exquisite poem in many ways, and vastly influential. This is an excellent translation (Johnson). It is very close to the Latin, in fact it is sometimes so close as to make some lines temporarily puzzling -- and some of the word choices are very obscure English -- but it does give a feel for how much is actually being done in the very tight, mosaic-like Latin. A similar translation (also with facing page Latin) is David Ferry's well-known version, which is looser, but probably easier to read for the first time reader. Older, good translations are by the eminent Georgic scholar, Wilkinson (in an earlier Penguin edition with the most erudite introductions), and C.D.Lewis' earlier famous translation. The Oxford World Classics translation by Peter Fallon is just weird. For farmers, the line-by-line Mynors commentary on everything from soil types to astronomical signs is the bees' knees (for bees, check out book IV).

This is not a very good translation. The notes are fairly elementary and the vocabulary and syntax of the verse is obscure and confusing. Much better is L. P. Wilkinson's translation in an earlier Penguin edition. One nice thing about the present edition is the presence of the Latin original on the opposite page.

The reviews are from Mynor's commentary, which is not the Wilkinson Penguin.The Georgics is a deep work, all the more powerful in these days of environmental concern. Part of its merit is its meditation on what is and is not controllable in the human relationship with the land. It is hard to believe that someone could write so beautifully about soil and pigs and vines, but Virgil accomplishes this and much more. It has for two thousand years been one of the touchstones of western civilization, so might be worth a little of your time! The best parts are in book 4 -- the allegorical story of beekeeping, which (among other descendants) finds a later echo in Book 1 of Paradise Lost -- and the exquisite story of Orpheus and Eurydice, itself embedded in the story of Aristeus and Proteus.Wilkinson is one of the deans of Virgilian scholarship, and it shows here in his introduction (there could have been more notes -- for notes, head for Mynor), and the translation is accurate and in places quite beautiful in its own right. Of the other translations available, Lewis is an old favourite, but I am now fond of David Ferry's version. David Ross' book on the Physics and Poetry of the Georgics is worth having as a resource to hand.

This is an extraordinarily beautiful edition of the poet's work translated by Dryden and published by the Heritage Press in 1953. The publisher shrewdly chose an Italian,Bruno Bramanti,to furnish illustrations that are grave and lovely.I prefer this translation by Dryden for its' structure,but there is an American-flavored rendering by Janet Lembke that is sensitive, and modern in the best sense of the word.That said,I find Dryden's trumpet of rhyme irresistible:What makes a plenteous harvest,when to turnThe fruitful soil,and when to sow the corn;The care of sheep,of oxen and of kine,And how to raise on elms the teeming vine;The birth and genius of the frugal bee,I sing,Maecenas,and I sing to thee.The translation is majestic,stirring and timeless.It is a fair tribute to Tennyson's description of "Roman Virgil" as "the lord of language".You will seldom own a more beautiful book.

The Kindle edition linked to this is NOT Mynors' commentary, obviously. Nor is the supposed hardback link, which is a rip-off press of J. B. Greenough 1900. "What makes the cornfield smile," etc. Beware.

The warm and friendly poet from Mantua, Publius Virgilius Maro, in his didactic poem entitled the "Georgics," covers topics relating to farming: in book one he deals with crops, in book two trees and shrubs, in book three livestock, and in book four bees. While several scholars have regarded this work as one of the best Latin poems ever, it must be taken into account that it is, nevertheless, far less entertaining than his famous "Aenied," and much more difficult to read. At times, in the "Georgics," Virgil echoes with that same brilliance many people have come to love in the "Aenied." But for the most part, this poem may be rigorous for anyone not serious about Roman poetry, so it is not recommended for everyone. In context of Virgil's time, this poem easily gets five stars, but the many archaisms found in it tend to alienate modern readers, and so, with much hesitation, the poem receives only three.
