About the Author
Eric R. Kandel is a University Professor and Fred Kavli Professor at Columbia University and a Senior Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The recipient of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his studies of learning and memory, he is the author of In Search of Memory, a memoir that won a Los Angeles Times Book Prize; The Age of Insight: The Quest to Understand the Unconscious in Art, Mind, and Brain, from Vienna 1900 to the Present, which won the Bruno Kreisky Award in Literature, Austria’s highest literary award; and Reductionism in Art and Brain Science: Bridging the Two Cultures, a book about the New York School of abstract art. He is also the coauthor of Principles of Neural Science, the standard textbook in the field.

Always like Kandel, from his textbooks to his personal revelations (the latter more so). As a rundown of the status of neuroscience today, this deserves a fifth star. He presents the material beautifully, so that even when technical terms (such as particular areas of the brain) are tossed in without full definition, the whole still carries you along with superb clarity.My only reservation is his stance that certain mechanisms of the brain have been firmly established, when, from what I've read elsewhere, that's not necessarily the case. He's a staunch materialist (as am I), but I wonder if it doesn't make him want to believe that the neural and genetic foundations of the conditions he describes, such as Alzheimer’s, are solidly established and incontrovertible (are amyloid beta deposits definitely a cause of Alzheimer’s or a result or an association?).But it's as good an up-to-date look at the state of neurophysics in the brain as you'll find anywhere. I gained a lot of new insights (for instance, that my cat has likely damage to the lateral nucleus of his amygdala – and here I thought he was just nuts).
This is almost a reference book, except that, 1) it draws on short case studies and fascinating stories of research discoveries and patients; and 2), rather than being limited to stating the facts, Dr. Kandel asks questions throughout. He knows his subject, but he’s still curious and is still exploring the brain, the mind, and consciousness. That’s reassuring.The first chapter includes both historical and modern approaches to the study of the brain (I now have a new respect for synapses), and demonstrates that Kandel is a good narrator/storyteller. He covers a range of conditions devoting a chapter for each; autism, depression, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, dementia, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, addictions, gender identity, brain disorders and creativity, and more. He concludes with a chapter on consciousness, or, “the great remaining mystery of the brain.â€As an example, one chapter discusses the history of research on autism and what we know so far. The way mothers of autistic children were treated in the past is quite sad. Today, knowing that genes play a role in autism is oddly comforting, because it means scientists are on the path to learning more. One learns that autism also is subject to environmental influence and possibly a gene mutation. Kandel explains why folks on the spectrum can get sensory overload and some behaviors. It’s a chapter full of interesting background. If you know someone on the spectrum, this will help you understand them better. If you are on the spectrum, this may shed some light.For each condition, Kandel draws upon historical background and scientific research to date. His goal is to increase human understanding, and understanding brain disorders gives us insight.
Dr. Eric Kandell, a Nobel Prize winning psychiatrist and neuroscientist, has written a fascinating and informative book. If the reader has a limited science background, it may be a tough slog through the specific neurological terminology, but the author includes both illustrations as well as a detailed index in the hard back edition for reference. Kandell's main premise is that psychiatrists and neurophysiologists can get a better understanding of the functions of the human brain, by studying disorders of the brain. He focuses on autism, depression, bipolar disorder, dementia, schizophrenia, Alzheimers, Parkinson's, Huntington's, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction. In each instance, the author defines the disorder, gives the history of its diagnosis and treatment modalities and discusses the latest research in terms of genetics, brain scans, animal studies, surgery, or pharmacological approaches. Where applicable, he includes a paired approach of psychiatry and medicine. Having a father who suffered for years from Alzheimers, this reviewer found enlightenment and a sense of hope for the future regarding this disease.Some absolutely fascinating revelations include the use of a drug to treat some physical ailment which surprisingly relieved symptoms of mental disorders too. Also the section on creativity and mental disorders reveals that many leading painters, writers, poets and performers excel precisely because they suffer from a mental disorder like autism or bipolar disorder. The burgeoning topic of transgender individuals is also explored. Most exciting is the prospect of the merging of psychoanalysis and the new biology of the mind to provide answers and perhaps cures for many who are suffering.
As one reviewer noted, this book is written to stimulate neurons. Dr. Kandel has access to all the latest researchers and is able to deliver a thought-provoking book to bring all of the general population up to date with his findings from readings and conversation. It is wonderful that he wants to share this information in easy to read diagrams and paragraphs. I was sorry that a number of top researchers in psychiatry were not mentioned, but Dr. Kandel limited his space. I am ill with schizophrenia and I was encouraged to read about the latest findings of Dr. Steven McCarroll's team. Those of us ill with the disease have long suspected the immune system, as many of us have also have had cancer.Read this book in all of its awe and wonder at the findings of brain diseases.Luanne Holsinger
