Twelve-year-old Reza has no desire to fight; he loves music and would rather play the piano and listen to the contraband Western songs supplied by his beloved uncle Habib. Reza and Ebi join the Iranian army, and then, in a horrific scene, their cohort of child soldiers are sent across a minefield to set off the mines with their expendable small bodies. The rest of the story follows Reza's time in an Iraqi prisoner-of-war camp among the other "lost boys" of the book's title. Reza's adolescent rebellion, passion for music, and loyalty to his friends make him an appealing protagonist, and the constant dangers threatening him create a compelling read. Secondary characters demonstrate the complexity of attitudes and loyalties during the Iran-Iraq conflict: the unseen Iranian army leaders send their own country's children to be mangled, while an Iraqi guard helps Reza escape sure death at the prisoner-of-war camp. Author Darcey Rosenblatt’s clear, simple, and beautiful writing brings the conflicts in 1982 Iran into the light through the experience of Reza, a 12-year-old boy now forbidden by law from playing or singing his beloved music. Rozenblatt deftly weaves the exploits of Reza and his best friend Ebi into a larger cultural story—the conversion of Iran to religious law, and the recruitment of young Iranian teens to fight a holy war against Iraq—while staying firmly in the minds of her young and relatable characters. “See, I knew this would be good,†says Ebi to Reza as they head, at twelve, to the battlefront. “We’re real warriors now, my friend. Just like on TV.†I learned much from this book that broke my heart, yet Rosenblatt wisely keeps most of the story away from the battlefield and immersed in the true-to-life friendships between Reza and Ebi, the other boys at the prisoner of war camp where Reza lands, an Iraqi guard, and an Irish aid worker who reconnects him with his music and reawakens his dreams. Highly recommended for middle-grade readers, classrooms, and libraries.
Lost Boys entwines a powerful, bittersweet coming-of-age story with the grim setting of an Iraqi POW camp in the 1980s. Reza is an extremely likeable and relatable hero, defined primarily by his loyalty to his friends and his love for forbidden music; he's someone I rooted for all the harder each time his situation got bleaker. The author deftly balances the brutality of the world Reza is trying to survive in with the sensitivity of younger readers--no easy feat. A must read for anyone who is unfamiliar with the story of Iran's child soldiers in that time, anyone already interested in that setting who wants to know more, and anyone who simply wants to be moved by excellent writing and a memorable main character.
Lost Boys captured my heart and made me think about all of the children who get caught up in wars that forever alter the course of their lives. Reza and his friend Ebi have a strong friendship and it was thoroughly tested through very trying circumstances. I was deeply moved by their situation and how they dealt with adversity and triumph. It should be required reading for all junior high students and it's great for adults as well.
This is a story that needed to be told. I've never read about this time and place, and was fascinated and saddened by what the boys upon which this novel is based must have gone through. While an important book on a difficult subject, the writing is so lovely and effortless that you will be whisked away into Reza's world, feeling his joys and experiencing his pain. You'll be turning pages quickly as your heart breaks and grows.I would highly recommend this book for boys and girls, tweens and teens, and adults, too. You'll feel as if you've stepped out of your life and into Reza's, a world away in time, geography and experience. It's the very best kind of read that leaves you with a new friend, and somehow changed.
What a powerful story! Thank you Darcey Rosenblatt for introducing readers to this piece of history. As a mother of four boys, I had an especially difficult time reading about these young boys going off to war, some of them eager to do it but having no idea what was truly in-store for them. While the story-line was disturbing to me and uncomfortable at times, I somehow fell into Reza's unwavering hope. He's a gem of a character, with an extraordinary heart who I still think about. It was his love of music and friendship that made me fall in-love with him and the danger he faced every day had me ripping through the pages at lightning speed. It's a must read for everyone, especially boys of any age. Well done!
This vibrant, moving novel is a great read for both young and old adults! I eagerly turned the pages, gasping in delight and dismay as the story elements unfolded. Particularly as the mother of two treasured 11 year-old boys (who are currently reading and enjoying the book too), I felt attached to the main character as he navigated a culture and a war so foreign to my own experiences and ideals. The writing is perfect – artful and engaging. This book provides wonderful entrée to discussion with young people about government, war, priorities, friendship, family, loyalty, and the importance of vigorously exercising authentic independent judgment. Kudos to the author! As a bonus, the book cover is lovely.
'Lost Boys' takes place in Iran in 1982. It is a powerful and very engaging story about a 12 year old boy navigating the pressures of adhering to Ayatollah Khomeini's oppressive regime which includes sending young kids to war against Iraq. Reza, the protagonist faces choices and decisions no one his age should be forced to make. Loyalty, friendship, heartbreak, disappointment, fear along with admirable bravery color his journey evoking strong emotional responses along the way. The historical context is fascinating, the characters captivating and I became immediately immersed from beginning to end. Meant for young adults, it is a great read for all ages.
Wow! This is an enlightening look into the life of a likable young boy dealing the best he can with terrible circumstances. Ms. Rosenblatt has done her homework to make a very complicated conflict and cultural setting accessible to readers young and old. Kudos to this debut author for her willingness to shed light on the plight of kids caught up in war. Although the events are shocking and horrible, the story of this warm and intelligent young boy filled me with renewed hope for the next generation.
