I just started drawing 3 mo. Ago with you can draw in 30 days and it’s so true. After that I tried other books and found none to be as good as Mark kistlers book, so I bought 4 other of his book as well including this one and can now do most anything . I am 57 and never could draw anything! Now I want to draw everyday even if only have time to doodle an idea for later.
I feel like Mark was all time next to me while I was reading this book. Some lessons seems to be way complicated and I even were thinking to give 4 stars but when I managed to draw ballet slipper with more details than suggested Mark, I understood that he did his job.I would like readers and publisher pay attention that: some instructional pictures are wrong (missing) during lessons: penguin, frog head and clipart hand (nothing critical but...).Very often, the first blue print and following drawings are way different. For example: while drawing clipart hand, instruction told me to place pinky at certain place in blueprint. When I finished my hand was looking strange. I compared my final result with Mark's and discovered that he moved pinky way down on 3 or 4th step (but said nothing about that).BTW in the lesson about cake there are two sources of light not one as mentioned in book. I used technic which invited guest artist taught us while drawing boot. The first light is from front left while second - behind right. That explains why we have two shadows, one opposite to another.Some measuring hints are useless because they are told relative to some part of picture, which size is not mentioned at all. The rest measuring hints (including pencil) in this will teach you how to make your picture proportional.I found only few hacks practical: ruler, stumpy from napcin and couple of more (IMHO using your fingers to draw oval seems to be correct only for kids but not adults). BTW those big gray boxes 'please read those two pages, no drawing yet' was annoying and I wish in Kindle version it can be replaced with just single headline.Despite the fact I had original Kindle book, I found scanned PDF version more easy to follow on my iPad. The pages in PDF version are more easy to read and follow. In Kindle version I had to scroll back (3-7 clicks) to see the original picture (to compare it to instructions) while in PDF version I could scroll with single swap.In general, another book 'you can draw in 30 days' is better for start. This one is more to adding additional skills to your drawing (however can be used as first book as well). Currently I am going to subscribe for one year video lessons.All my friends cannot ever imagine I could draw so realistic hands, noses, eyes (the lips are still the most difficult body part for me, however after this book I can draw them more realistically).Thank you Mark for great job.
This book is a huge disappointment. Instead of having sketchers use a ruler to measure proportions, Kistler suggests using 'hacks' such as fingers or coins. The results are ridiculously off what the final sketch should look like. Very frustrating.Kistler's other book, You Can Draw in 30 Days, was wonderful and I learned a lot. Spend your money on that one.
I’m a little biased because I’ve taught with the author at a kids’ art camp but if you want to have the best possible shot at understanding the drawing tricks and techniques needed to fool the eye, Mark Kistler is a good as they come. I’ve painted for over 30 years but I learned more in my first week of sitting in on his classes at camp than I’d learned combined up to that point. He takes all the info that the great art masters figured out centuries ago and puts them into a dozen principles that are easy to follow and ridiculously easy to master! When you “get†the theory, the actual drawing is a breeze! You can’t IMAGINE the magic you have inside you already. TRY IT!
This book is AWESOME!!!!! I am not an artist and struggle even following along. BUT...This book is amazing. I love it. I cannot wait for Saturday so I can go outside and enjoy my new book. This is a book for the absolute beginner or anyone in-between. The diagrams make you look at objects differently. I can see down the line being able to look at something and actually draw it. I went through this book (in a little more than 30 days), and I'm shocked how much I learned and improved! I was one of those people that said I can't draw anything, even a straight line! I honestly believed that drawing was a talent, not a skill. I'm so glad I got this book on a whim - I'm drawing every day and loving it! Obviously I still have a LONG way to go, but I'm so surprised I've even started down this path.If you have any desire to learn to draw, this is the perfect book to start with!
Watched Mark Kistler on PBS in the late 80s or was it early 90s. Fabulous to understand that anyone can learn to draw. It just takes someone like Kistler to guide you to actually 'seeing' what you are looking at so you can copy it.
My review is only subjective. I have enjoyed seven of Mark Kistler's books but I could not relate to this one. I simply didn't care for the method of drawing.
