Grade 5-10-While a reporter for the New York World, Nellie Bly proposed a trip around the world to beat the record set by fictional character Phileas Fogg in Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days. Given the technological and social limitations of the 1880s, this was a bold idea indeed, as explained in Peck's introduction. The bulk of the book is Bly's description of her travels, edited for length and tension. As Peck points out, "Readers...may detect in...comments about the native peoples...a friendly, yet superior, attitude" that was typical of Bly's time and economic class. This condescending attitude shows up several times, including when the reporter described her impressions of populous Hong Kong. "This is a sample of the way in which the Chinese huddle together. They remind me of a crowd of ants on a lump of sugar." But in spite of her outdated attitudes, Bly's pieces offer interesting, humorous descriptions of other lands and customs, as well as of her traveling companions and arrangements. Her words, though written over 100 years ago, are accessible and entertaining. I love the spirit and gumption of Nellie Bly. She doesn't complain as she goes through great hardship, she just turns it into adventure. She chooses these adventure with no thought whatsoever about the consequences. I could never be quite as daring as her, so it's fun to go with her on her gutsy journeys.
This most delightful, energetic, confident, focused, and talented young woman convinced her newspaper publishing boss to finance her effort to surpass Jules Verne's imaginary around-the-world travel record of 80 days.
This would be a documentary if it were a film I guess. Nellie does what was unthinkable for a woman in the 19th century, which is travel just about anywhere by herself, and without trunks and hoop skirts and a maid to care for it all. She takes one "hand bag," which isn't described in much detail but she can carry it herself. Her big jar of cold cream, the application of which she hopes will ward off sunburn, is her biggest deterrent to that minimalist luggage thing. So for the historical details it's rather interesting reading, but it's basically a transcription of her travel journal, with maybe some embellishment as she got it ready for publication, but on the whole, rather dry reading. I really skimmed toward the end...
Nellie Bly is a basic, non-flowery writer who writes directly to the scene. This is the second book of hers I've read(10 days in a Madhouse) and I enjoy her simple style.
The book was very interesting. The reading was sometimes interrupted by format errors in the Kindle version: weird spacing, missing punctuation, etc.
I was looking for another author's take on this adventure. This was just an okay read.
I spent hundreds having the original photocopied, and now you can read her book for a few bucks!
