As I have read a lot of articles and books lately that talk about the things that promote false confessions, the "Reid Method" of police interrogation is a ubiquitous component of the problem. This method dates back to the 1950's, and has been taught to every major and most minor police organization.The idea that a trained officer can tell when someone is telling the truth--using the methods in this book--has been demonstrated to be false by recent behavioral studies. The assumptions underlying much of this method, and the encouragement of officer's rote testimony as to those unvalidated assumptions can be picked up in this book. The components of an interrogation, the way an officer is trained to approach the subject, and structure the questions, police behavior, and environment of the questioning are all laid out here, as well as the significant difference in police thinking between what is an "interview" and what is an "interrogation."Unless you work in the criminal justice field--as a police officer, prosecutor, criminal defense lawyer or judge, you probably won't have any use for this book.
