About the Author
Anthony J. Ryder studied at the Art Students League of New York, the New York Academy of Art, and the École Albert Defois in France with oil painter Ted Seth Jacobs. He began his teaching career at the New York Academy in 1985, and has taught at the Art Students League and in various locations in the United States and France. His paintings and drawings are in many private collections. Mr. Ryder lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

I purchase books for ideas. In the drawing category I have many books and most of them espouse a rather common idea of drawing which involves making an overall shape, such as an oval, and then working to improve the shape into a face or feature into which the eyes, mouth et al are added. In Ryder's book he starts out stressing that the artist should use a method that allows the overall production of the figure to proceed in distinct steps which stress the total development of the work rather than just one area at a time. He wants the artist to try to use an "envelope" to start out with that embodies the entire figure including the gesture and the energy of the pose.This is a new idea - at least to me - and it is worth trying. The author doesn't say it is the only way to draw but he does say it will improve your drawing to try this method and work at it consistently. Of course it isn't for everyone. There are many methods of drawing. Contour is only one. Mass is another. This author uses what is basically a contour method and he adds in the mass (light and dark areas) after the contour is perfect. It shows in his art. Some will like it and some will not. But that isn't the point. The point is he has a method of producing lifelike figures that is different.Thus, I give the book 4 stars, because Mr. Ryder introduces this new idea in a straightforward fashion that allows the artist to try it out to see if it suits them. The illustrations could be a little more complete but they are good enough to introduce the concept and by trial and error the student can see if it is something that works for them.
Saw a lot of reviews here that start not for beginners. Why not. When you learn to play a musical instrument; you should learn the 'right way' first. I have been drawing for 50 years. This book has helped me improve my skills . If you are a beginner; this book will not baby you. All the ispiration and self encouraging comes from you, not the book. If you read the book, follow the instructions, and then draw LOTS. You will be very inspired. If you need inspiration, then you should draw. Draw anything, then draw some more. Inspiration comes from work. You don't get inspired and then work. This is big BANG FOR THE BUCK.
As beginner this book,s slow and step by step yet THOROUGHLY detailed approach to figure drawing makes developing this skill quite possible and within reach. I liked the way in which it elevated the drawing technique to represent more than just a reflection of a body. It stresses all the subtle tees one can miss if you do not know what to look for. It is encouraging to see it is a patient process that needs time and a lot of focus and careful observation. This book illustrates how to make what is seemingly impossible possible. I suggest the reader work through it slowly and make notes. Lots of handy tips.
Unfortunately, like many art books on my shelves I have not spent enough time with them. It was highly recommended by an exceptional draftsman. It's a sad admission... It does explains triangulation well... of how to find 3 landmarks on the subject you are drawing so when the model moves you have relative points established. That was helpful. OK,OK, i will give an actual review after going further into it.
I am a published illustrator and have been drawing since the age of about 2. But after several years away from my love of drawing I have come back to retrain myself... I hope from the beginning, because I have learned so many self-taught screwy and cramping habits that I need to try and start from the beginning, as much as possible.This book is truly a wonderful work of art in and of itself, solely focused on the craft and study of figure drawing. It is very well written, concise and excellent for either a complete beginner or the advanced artist.
Simply the best drawing guide, ever. A must-read for the serious artist who wants to draw realistic figures or faces. Organized in a sequential manner, the drawing skills that evaded me in classes were elucidated in a clear illustrative manner. Nothing is left uncovered. This book had an immediate impact on my skill set.

After collecting many books on Anatomy and Drawing, Ryder's book takes a new a different approach to drawing. Just as thoughtful and to the point like Andrew Loomis (a great Artist in his own right)This book does an amazing job in bringing a fresh new perspective for novice and Professional alike. I've never felt more relaxed and was deeply engaged and excited in it's simplicity. Highly recommend this book for all levels of Artist. But do take heed-if your looking for quick shortcuts from this book, you're taking the material and your time for granted.
I found that Anthony Ryder's approach suited me almost perfectly. His instruction is unashamedly detailed and exacting yet I always felt that I was following the approach of someone who understands people, how to draw them and how to relate to them. Particularly, how to relate to someone seeking to improve their drawing skills. The discussions about the elements that make up the Ryder approach are interesting and proceed at a leisurely pace. For me, it was like being in the studio, discussing, drawing, discussing, drawing and reflecting. Needless to say, I loved this book. The drawings are stunning and worth the price of the book alone and the instruction has benefited not just my drawing but my painting as well. I have been painting a commissioned portrait while reading this book and have applied Ryder's approach to the painting as I went along with really pleasing results regarding likeness, form and interpreation.
