Synopsis: “The Road to Andorra†is essentially journalistic non-fiction. It’s the story of the author and her young family traveling on a whim to Andorra, where they would live for a year or so. While there is some introduction to characters, the protagonist is always the country itself. While researching a book to read, I learned that there are very few Andorran authors…and even fewer Andorran books about Andorra. So I chose this one for the information I would glean from it.The Good: She details customs, quirks, and cultures of the region with a journalist’s voice–never as someone who is fully absorbed in the moment. For my purposes (wanting to learn more about the country), this is exactly what I wanted.The Bad: this isn’t necessarily compelling literature. The reader doesn’t get attached to anyone, they don’t elicit sympathy or strong emotions. It’s like reading a travel book before a trip: it’s business, not pleasure.
Published in 1960, this is the account of the Australian writer's time with her artist husband and two young sons in Andorra and in Ibiza.Both places are on the cusp of modern life: but as Deane describes the costumes and folklore, the Andorran boys taking the cows to pasture, the weekly excitement of the baker's van - you could be back in ancient times.When husband Malcolm gets work on an Ibizan pig farm, they relocate - and here we have the comic tale of Deane's struggle to cross over to the isle with their large dog; attending a pig killing party, and a brief trip to neighbouring Formentera.But when suddenly and unexpectedly ejected from Spain (one of her earlier works about Malaga had caused offence), they find themselves crossing back into Andorra and victims of a dastardly crime: finding a policeman was "no easy task in a country where the total force including the standing army, numbers twelve."...Entertaining little work, giving a picture of two relatively unknown places as life once was.
