Every poem in this book is beautiful, but it is short, and includes only a small introduction to many aspects of her work. I understand the constraints of space, especially in a series, yet Brooks deserves r more than this alotment to begin to understand her long term importance. Usually you get the "greatest" hits, but this is not even that. If you want a better, broader view of her work "Black" is the better bet, worth it where you can find it. This would make an excellent book as a GIFT to a person interested, but not knowing of, Brooks, perhaps. If you have a poetaster on your list. This is purely a partial "greatest" hits, with a succinct introduction by the editor. One sees her photograph rather than Brook's picture on the back flap. This is a book beautifully bound, produced, and full of good and great poems. That said, it is not worth the price, and can be gathered better on your own until we have a the complete works. This is a beautiful "novelty" gift book for those who don't read poetry, and is a fun refresher for those who do. Elizabeth Alexander's introduction is a perfect example of one dominant genre of the essay. Do not buy this book alone.. You be the judge. This book has many great poems in it, but it is far to short, and constrained by space, and leaves a reader wanting more. It would be good for use in-class as supplement.
This is fine anthology. Unfortunately it doesn't include her later work. But the poetry is so compelling that I purchased another anthology that does have later work.
I love Ms. Brooks' poems. It's a great book of her work.
