Fake and biased reviews, false information, factual mistakes - author Douglas Ward, Berlitz Cruising and Cruise Ships 2018.After the scandalous 2017 edition I expected a word of apology for the series of fake and biased cruise ship reviews in Douglas Ward book.In those reviews, several famous cruise ships appeared like a fantastic creatures from the paintings by Salvador Dali. Literally! Look at “Soft Construction with Boiled Beans (Premonition of Civil War)”. The ships were mixed up, the descriptions given did not belong to the ships, high ratings were given to non-existing features, many important things were skipped, and the “reviewers” simply did not see the ships.Not a single word of apology for the 2017 nonsense!The 2018 edition represents a sort of hurried clean up in the kingdom of absurd.Some examples of the most astonishing distortions have been made up.Some are left as is.How does this review book survive? This is how…This is all about the false impression.The readers are impressed with the colorful story telling part (Pages 1 - 173) that is really good (except the insinuations about cruise lines cuisine comparison, Page 107).What about the main part (cruise ship reviews and ratings) from page 174 to the end?One should tear it off and throw away.Why?I will tell you why. I cannot review the whole book here. Just a few examples...as apperes from the reviews, Mr. Ward is not able to tell the difference between the ships.Look. A Conquest Class ship (Carnival Cruise Line) is presented as a modified Destiny Class ship (Carnival Sunshine). A Splendor Class ship is presented (per its description) as a Conquest Class ship.How can every aspect of the ship be “meticulously evaluated” if the reviewer is not able to tell one ship from another? It automatically means that the ratings of these ships are false.Holland America: Vista Class ships, Siganture Class ships, Pinnacle Class ships. The same large block of text description (“attention to details” included) continue to migrate from one ship to another. It does not matter for Mr. Ward that all three ships are different design.The 2018 Cruise Guide states that the Norwegian Epic is a close sister ship to the Norwegian Getaway. This is a signature of incompetence (the Getaway is a completely new project that was created to get rid of the major mistakes done with the Epic).Favorites?Oh, yes.In the 2017 book Mr. Ward rated MSC Preziosa as #5 Large Resort Ship (leaving behind all Royal Caribbean fleet, Celebrity ships, etc.). It’s needless to say that the review of the Preziosa was sugar sweet and complimentary with little to no faults found.The 2018 book invites us to the parade of MSC ships in the list of 10 top Large Resort Ships. The new favorite is MSC Meraviglia. 4.5* (!)This floating anthill (4500 lower beds) has received a glorious review - no faults!Take time to read other ship reviews (Celebrity Silhouette, Norwegian Getaway, P&O Azura – to name a few). You will find out that “the open deck space… made even smaller by the exclusive Haven area” on the NCL ship.Have you cruised on the Getaway?Have you cruise on MSC?Have you cruised on both?You have not. This is how this book survives.Few readers have cruised on both, can compare, and see how the facts have been manipulated.The Meraviglia also has an exclusive are that actually takes even more space. But there is no word about it in the MSC review. What is a fault for NCL is not a fault for MSC.Mr. Ward has criticized P&O Azura promenade deck for being narrow and two-sided only (not wrap-around).What did Mr. Douglas Ward say about promenade deck on Meraviglia where it does not exist at all?You now it – nothing. No faults.The Celebrity Silhouette review will tell you about design flaws related to balconies (struts, overhang). The Meraviglia has the same design flaws but don’t expect them to be mentioned in the review (and reflected in the ship’s rating!)Page 107: How major cruise lines score on cuisine out of 10.MSC scores 7.1.Celebrity scores 7.0.This rating alone is enough to send the book to a recycle bin. For those who did not have a chance to compare: this is the same as to say that McDonalds offers the best cuisine in your city. “Well, a sort of”.Potential readers probably have heard that Berlitz Cruise Guide by Douglas Ward is a cruise Bible. So people trust the reviews. People trust the ratings.The review section is impressive indeed.Look: “300 ships reviewed, scored, and rated”.What a gigantic work!Attention to various details is impressive: balconies on RCI ship are measured (42 sq.ft.), Nieuw Amsterdam has a gas turbine and a pool for kids, NCL Epic has azipod propulsion, Costa ships unfortunately offer no cabins for solo cruisers, 182 cabins were added on Carnival Glory, Liberty of the Seas has 2 pools, MSC Preziosa has a large tennis/basketball court, mini-golf, and a jogging track.We can continue and continue.Isn’t it impressive? Yes, it is.However there is a secret behind this: everything listed above is fake. The balconies are 50% larger, the Nieuw Amsterdam has neither gas turbine, nor kids pool. NCL Epic has no Azipods. Costa (yes) offer cabins for one. Carnival Glory has never had 182 additional cabins installed. Liberty of the Seas has 5 (!) pools, not 2 – what a miserable ship it would have been had the book told the truth! And Mr. Ward favorite MSC Preziosa does not have a basketball court, mini-golf, and a jogging track. The reviewer should have known that, but he does not because the reviews are fake. So are the ratings.The book says: "This book has one aim: to help you identify the ship and cruise that is right for you".Now think how many cruisers could miss their desirable cruises (or book the wrong ones) after getting false ship facts from lazy, biased, or complimentary reviews.It’s a shame that the book is printed again without a major clean up.In my opinion, the publishers have to admit that the problem of the book is not “mistakes” and “misprints”.The attitude is the problem. Lazy, incomplete, biased, complimentary, even fake reviews are the problem.Even if a part of the rating system is based on the reviews of that kind, the whole rating system is corrupted and has no value.The review part has to be started from fresh. Otherwise it is not worth the paper it is printed on.The book will be with us on our upcoming cruise. There is something to discuss with fellow cruisers.

Not as good as it was...Ward gives out erroneous information regarding cruise trivia-Cunard’s Brittania Restaurant isn’t named after a ship that sailed from 1914-1950! That was the Aquitania!! The Manhattan cocktail wasn’t named after the American liner built in the 30s either. Also, the number of a ship’s inside cabins is no longer listed. Ward also seems biased against anything geared towards American tastes.

Good solid guide to cruising. I recommend it, very helpful

my husband uses this book like I use a cookbook. He thinks that they repeat some of the information on ships within the same line.Otherwise its great. Most helpful.

The thing we like about Doug Ward is his standards are extremely high and this often means we discount some of his criticisms (or "niggles"). Look, if you're about to spend hard-earned money on a cruise vacation, the least you could do is obtain a basic understanding of cruise line differences-- their strengths & weaknesses. We vacationers tend to expect gourmet cuisine, spectacular entertainment, immaculate and well-appointed ships, outstanding service, and interesting itineraries. We just DON'T WANT TO PAY for them and this is partly the fault of the cruise lines for advertising the experience. We feel one tends to get what one pays for and speak from some experience with our 47th cruise coming up in a mere 3 months, 25 days, 19 hours, 44 minutes, and 12 seconds. (But, who's counting?) There's a cruise for all of us, and Douglas Ward helps navigate a course to a vacation experience that's unbeatable in terms of relaxation, romance, and enjoyment--- if the proper cruise line, ship, itinerary, and sailing season are booked. This book will help you choose all that. Bon Voyage!!
